Reports: Stingray kills 'Crocodile Hunter'

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/04/australia.irwin/index.html

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Yea. I loved sitting and watching his show with the kids. My son is nuts about the program.

Damn, that sucks. :wah!: I really liked the guy, and enjoyed watching his show with all those close calls. I always thought it would have been a croc that would eventually get him. Damn, this is sad.

I always figured a croc or a snake would get him, our boy loves the animal planet channel and discovery too.

When we were kids we would watch "wild kingdom" on sunday nights , it was tame next to silly steve playing with cobras.

It sucks. :(

^Damn you're old. :P

I remember watching Wild Kingdom with my grandfather. Marlin Perkins is another one that did wonders when it came to opening up the animal world and dispelling myth for fact.

Just read the news myself. That is sad. He was relatively young and he has little kids. Not surprising how he died, but still, it is a sad thing. While he was crazy, he seemed to be almost invincible.

I'm an Admin. at an Aussie/NZed forum. They are all blown away. Now, mind you, when he was alive they all made fun of him, but he was one of their own and they mourn the loss.

I always figured the guy would go early with a bite from some creature he foolishly decided was "wot a beauty", because he was fearless and he also hammed it up. But death always comes unexpectedly.

I feel very sorry or his young family.

Not only that, but he had guts which is probably more than I can say for those who made fun of him. He knew the limits, and he went right up to them, sometimes even past it. He feared nothing, and understood creatures in a way that is very rare.

At least he went doing what he loved. The world just ain't the same now without him though... :(

Fuck. This is tragic. I LOVED The Crocodile Hunter when I was younger. Me and my mates used to watch the show all the time when we came back from school.

He did extremley risky shit though so something was going to happen eventually I guess.

Still, I'm gutted by this news. Irwin was mad as a box of hats but he was awesome.

R.I.P Steve. :(

And Australia rejoyces. If you've ever talked to an Aussie, they'll tell you that even though Irwin did add a lot to Australia as far as tourism, they all hated him. They all thought he was a horribly overly-stereotyped outback Dundee-like goon. I'll bet you a large percentage of Australia's population are happy he's dead.

He did once say that Australians do see him as a bit of an embarassment because of his catch phrases and hamming it up, ect.

If you ask me they need to get over themselves. Irwin was a legend.

Perkins was a pussy. He was always far away from the danger as his lackey was being chased by a flock of belligerent geese.

Yea, I forgot. Because he wasn't always hands on with the animals he was a pussy.

"He became recognized as a strong voice in favor of ecology long before the cause came into fashion, and he had an ability to express love and respect for animals on his show as well as warn viewers that extinction is forever. He also worked to enlighten people about animals that are feared or killed because of superstitions. During its run on television, the program was shown on 200 stations in North America and in more than 40 countries worldwide." Jacques Cousteau wasn't always hands on either.

They cleared the forests for naturalsts like Steve Irwin to build the roads.
