Angela Lansbury: Women “must sometimes take blame” for harassment

The Hollywood actress says "there’s no excuse" for the way men like Harvey Weinstein have behaved but that women making themselves attractive “has backfired”

Angela Lansbury says women “must sometimes take blame” for sexual harassment because they “have gone out of their way to make themselves attractive”.

The 92-year-old actress, who is starring in the BBC1 adaptation of Little Women this Christmas, told this week’s issue of Radio Times that, in the light of the recent accusations made against Hollywood figures, women making efforts to look attractive “has backfired”.

“There are two sides to this coin,” she said. “We have to own up to the fact that women, since time immemorial, have gone out of their way to make themselves attractive. And unfortunately it has backfired on us – and this is where we are today.“We must sometimes take blame, women. I really do think that. Although it’s awful to say we can’t make ourselves look as attractive as possible without being knocked down and raped.”

Lansbury is not, however, suggesting that fault lies with individual victims: “Should women be prepared for this? No, they shouldn’t have to be! There’s no excuse for that. And I think it will stop now – it will have to. I think a lot of men must be very worried at this point.”

The veteran Hollywood actress, who’s had a career spanning seven decades, said she didn’t suffer any harassment or abuse from male executives.

Lansbury’s comments come after DKNY founder Donna Karan sparked criticism for defending the disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein and suggesting that women are ‘asking for it’ if they dress seductively.

They probably asked her a LEADING QUESTION to get their clickbait headline, and she is 92 and probably does have some old fashioned views like anyone that age.

Well it is the Daily Mail. Still...yikes.

I can't remember her ever dressing provocatively on screen...except maybe The Harvey Girls with Judy Garland. It was maybe her second film after Gaslight...

OMG LEG!

I have been harrased when I wasn't dressed seductively. I was 14 and went with my sister to the store late at night to pick up something really quick and I was in sweats practically and a huge sweatshirt and these guys who were probably in their 20's maybe 30's even asked me to lift my sweatshirt up so they could see my ass.
I guess I shouldn't have been 14. : ( Angela Landsbury could be right.

My wife has a horror story about a creepy friend of her dads when she was about 15 / 16. It's shit really.

As Kate Beckinsale put it recently, I just wish it was over soon. She longs for the day that men being creepy dicks is a memory like smoking on planes - it was unpleasant, we knew it was bad for us but we tolerated it. Now it's over it seems silly - why did we allow it?

I have to also accept that Kate Beckinsale speaking 5 languages and being really fuckin clever is SUPER HOT. It doesn't mean I would be creepy with her or get my dick out and start wanking. It is possible to appreciate the female form (in a broad sense beyond the purely physical) without being a total dick. A balance to all this would be good but FIRST WE STOP MEN BEING TOTAL DICKS AND CREEPY OK?

That's the thing -- with her, it's a product of being from 4 generations ago so it was handled differently in her time. But her arguments have been shot down a dozen times over when other people tried them who aren't 92 years old. So she isn't siding with pervy men, she knows that a crime is a crime. But she could use a little sit-down to bring her up to date with the nuances of the debate.

Fact is grown men shouldn't hit on 14yo kids no matter what time of the day it is... it's not like between 8pm and 6am it's a female child's fault. It's always the adults fault.

Saying women attract harassment by being attractive is like saying people attract being shot by police by being black.

Kate did another epic Instagram post the other day: https://www.instagram.com/p/BcCsqf7nqaV/?taken-by=katebeckinsale

And it wasn't even about them saying she's 55.

I wasn't being seriuos of course.

Exactly.
Also people have been harrased being ugly and attractive, it makes no difference.
