I recently picked up the Mini-Series version of Das Boot that clocks in at 5-and-a-half-hours. I've only ever seen the Directors cut version before and it does add an awful lot to the movie.

I am a complete U-Boat enthusiast and have a number of books written by former Kriegsmarine captains. I especially reccommend Iron Coffin, btw.

Anyway...yeah. Das Boot. One of the greatest movies ever made. I just finished watching the entire Mini hence the avatar of Thompson.

The mini-series is just the extended cut of the film. Wolfgang Peterson originally shot a huge amount more than is seen in even the three hour version of the Directors cut. It provides a lot more insight into the crew.



Oh and an aside: If anyone ever thinks of getting this film don't even think about getting the dubbed version. That's just a sucky thing to do.
 
Back in 1999 when DVDs where the latest craze the Das Boot DVD was one of the first produced - a sweet special edition with either the english or german dialog and a bunch of documentary features and whatnot - i didn't buy it but my firend did.
 
I was a massive fan when this was shown on TV. I can't remember how old I was but I do remember going to school and talking about it continually. Everyone thought I was mad and kept on asking me why I would watch a german subtitled movie. I must have been about 11.

BBC2 put it on at an excellent time - like 7pm or something and showed the entire mini series. It was compelling viewing.

I am a total fan - I don;t remember the beard like that in your Av - is that at the end or in the courtroom bit?
