Is this real life?
Is Ricky Gervais's latest comedy. It's about disabled people being disabled, apparently. I'll probably tune in for the first episode, with the expectation that I'm going to hate it. I find it hard to believe from the trailers that it's going to be "sensitive".

I was hoping this was about my favorite pro from Dancing with the Stars...

I've given up on ever getting Ricky Gervais humor. JUST LIKE THE THREE STOOGES.

So in the end it questioned the audience's intelligence as much as its characters'.

Man puts a bowl of custard on chair. Gets distracted. Sits down on custard.

Man stands next to pond. Gets distracted. Falls into pond.

It wasn't offensive and it wasn't sensitive either. It was just dull.

Gervais' Career is now

: HAHAHAHAHAAH HE'S MENTAL HE DOESN'T SAY THINGS YOU WOULD SAY OR DO THINGS YOU WOULD DO AND IT'S FUNNY, LOOK THAT ONE'S IN A WHEELCHAIR, HE CAN'T WALK IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES OF ALL THE STUPID THINGS THEY COULD DO LOL SPACKER! LOOK AT HIM, HE'S BLIND HAHAHAHAHA IT'S OK THOUGH, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT BY DOING THIS I DON'T MEAN IT AND I'M BREAKING DOWN THE BARRIERS.

What a cunt./

When your only friends left are the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you might as well start selling secrets to North Korea, because it's over Jocko.

His quality of 'comedy' is summed up by the Korean missile launch actually.

Lots of early optimism. Shows tenacity in going on with increasing criticism. Despite all the odds stacking up, things look good with much quality. Launches, then falls straight into the fucking ocean like a sumo wrestler bellyflopping off an Olympic diving board.

Fuck Gervais.

So yeah, finally watched this...not too good. Not as embarrassingly bad as Life's Too Short sometimes was, but the tone was all over the place. Like sometimes it wanted to be a docu-drama, sometimes it was Ricky Gervais falling in a pond in a scene so telegraphed that surely no one found it funny. The old woman dies and were's supposed to be sad but the over the top crying and five whole minutes of soft piano music ruins. And when the woman headbutted someone then just walked away completely unhurt? Gervais was actually alright, although it was pretty hard to think of the character as anything but "Ricky Gervais acting a bit thick."

SO this went to series (would it have if Gervais hadn't been involved? NO.) It was a bit toned down from the pilot (not slapstick or headbutting) but added an over the top pervert character who's allowed to hang around an old folk's home for some reason. Gervais does seem to care about the way the elderly are treated, which is good of him, but maybe he could try to get that message out without acting in the show himself? Because Derek is just a Ricky Gervais character - complete with Ricky Gervais mannerisms and doing "what is he like!" looks to camera - with a really poor depiction of a mentally handicapped man stuck on top. What is his disorder supposed to be? Whatever suits the plot, I guess (and there's a scene where someone tries to get him to do tests to be diagnosed with autism and all the characters start smugly saying "HE'S PERFECT HOW HE IS STOP TRYING TO CHANGE HIM" which seems directed at the critics of the show.) Karl Pilkinton does do a good job playing himself with a bald head though.
