DIRK GENTLY

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
On BBC4 tonight. Hasn't been advertised much and the reviews I've found online say "basically it's nothing like the books sorry" and Douglas Adams is dead, so I don't have high hopes really. BUT IT MIGHT BE GOOD?

I like the main actor Stephen Mangan (even his Credit Card ads) so they got the casting about right. I also quite like Darren Boyd.

Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd did Green Wing together. They are all connected via the "Smack the Pony" comedy thing, not sure if this is the same writer.

Hopefully we can say GOOD EPISODE at some point.

Well there's only one episode afaik, so "at some point" will have to be this week.

Helen Baxendale looks different now.

The Radio Times said it was pretty good, but noted that the lopping off of half the title kind of gives you an idea of how the rest of the material will be treated.

It didn't really follow the plot of the book at all and was way scaled down in terms of high conept sci fi and fantasy compared to the books, but I guess that makes sense on a BBC4 budget and if they're trying to get a series out of it. Thingy playing Dirk was good and Helen Baxendale was alright (remember when she was in Friends and had to speak in a ridiculous over the top accent so americans would know she was English? Urgh.) but I didn't really think the sidekick guy clicked with Dirk and maybe they should leave him out of the series or change him somehow.

IT WAS OKAY.

Hey! This comes back for a series (well, three episodes) starting on Monday on BBC4. MAYBE IT'LL BE GOOD. I'll watch it because that's what I do.

Yeah it was okay I mean nothing like "WOW IT'S LIKE DOUGLAS ADAMS IS ALIVE AGAIN" but pretty good I mean yes in a perfect world they'd be more accurate adapations of the books but once you get into Electric Monks and Asgardian Gods you can kind of see why they just went "fuck that" and turned it into something a little bit more down to Earth.

I'm fairly impressed by how Howard Overman can write several different things that are nothing alike (Misfits, Merlin, this.)

I liked the first one better, but it was good enough.

Looks like the next one might be using elements from the book.

I am so not watching that series. Some books are sacred. Douglas Adams' fit that description. Bad enough that I had to suffer through the GttG remake.

Well as mentioned it doesn't really follow the plot of the books (but there's references and the Dirk character is pretty close.)

And just watch the eighties HGTTG instead!

^Yeah, it's one of those shows I re-watch on a regular basis. That, and the radio version. Not to sound nerdish or something, but that IS the original, after all ;)

So, I liked tonight's episode. Not as much humour as last week (the very end was funny, even though I saw it coming) but a good story. Lydia Wilson (I looked her up) was really good as Jane/Elaine/Max/whatever her name was!
