There's actually a pretty big proportion of software engineering types in their 30s to 40s with families and kids who spend several hours on the weekends playing D&D with their engineering buddies from work.
Used to play back in the "grid paper and 3d6, 2d10, 1d4" days...
I don't think that the on-line versions really add much, and they certainly have taken the entire "dungonmaster" role out as an on-line version doesn't have the interactive element. I had good adventures that lasted hours consisting of a bar-fight and everyone being an ass hole. Sort of reminds me of TK...
I'll have to go look...but I doubt anyone plays "runequest" (which was my favorite RPG back in Highschool).
