The Vista search where you just type something into the box and it shows you all the files containing it seems pretty fast to me...just typed "Natalie" and a load of images came up. But not as fast as google, YOU'RE RIGHt.

And you have to have indexing on for that which slows the computer down anyway.

Pretty much instant on my mac laptop. Just type in whatever and it comes up right away.

Google on the interweb is a bit more user friendly, though. You actually get some context other than the name or type of file like you do in the OS.

Spotlight search in OS X is fast enough that I use it for an application launcher - if it's not in my dock, I can just command-spacebar, type the name, and in a second it's there. Hit enter and launch.
