I swore I'd never give up paper books. I like the way they smell, I like having stacks of them around and about.... I NEVER ASKED FOR THIS EREADER, but now I have one. I also have thousands of books on a tiny little sd card. THOUSANDS OF BOOKS. So, I said to myself: MYSELF YOU IS GONNA READ THE POWER OF MYTH ON THE EREADER. And so I am. I can once again read late into the night without my eyes getting tired. I can see the words, even in the terrible light of my living room. I love the eReader.

I am a traitor.

I have to keep real books. My eyes are already ruined from staring at LCD computer screens and TVs all day and night. They have to take a break from the electronics at some point. The printed word is one of the few escapes left, besides looking out the window.

Cassie, good for you! THOUSANDS of books. The mind boggles. And drools.

But, like Eggsy, I also need to get away from the screens and just read from real books to rest my eyes.
Which is what I'm off to do now. Night, all! <3

I have read one book on my kindlephone and have tried to start a few others, but it isn't the same. For junk reading I suppose it's fine, but any research I do, I'm gonna want a regular old fashioned paper-and-binding job. For one thing the battery never dies on them.

Since you can't get rid of us, it's the sensible thing to do.

And Dono, yeah, I even have to print out the lecture notes given to us electronically because I can't memorize them off the screen. When I research, I usually have three or more books I look into simultaneously, which is not really workable with the e-format.

May your your eyes hold out, Cassie Sassy Pants!!

That's an interesting point about doing research, though, Ily. I'll ask the one minion (who swears by the shiny new Tablet for reading) how that's working out. I am of the "various books open simultaneously" - researcher - school too, but maybe there's a new-fangled way to do it.

The first book I managed to finish on my phonekindle was Lost World by Crichton, which by the way is not much like the film. I read amazingly fast anyway, but this book seemed so short I found myself wondering if they edited it for electronic version. Just seemed like a reader's digest version or something. I hate when books do that. Several other books I've tried to read in the format I just lose interest in, even if they're old favorites.

Is a phone Kindle the size of an iphone? I don't want to read on something that small. The ereader I have is about the size of one of those big paperback pages OR SOMETHING. I've nearly finished The Power of Myth (definitely not junk reading). The battery lasts 6 hours, which is about 4 hours longer than I usually ever read at one sitting.

Curiousa2z, if you were doing research and needed to reference several books, you can have them all on your ereader at the same time. You just bookmark the pages and then you can switch between them very easily. IT'S QUITE AMAZING. It is also easier on my eyes than the paper books, which is why I'm a traitor now. I always said I'd never give up real paper books. I was kinda sniffy about it. Then my sister sent me one a couple weeks ago, and I ignored it for days... then I checked out the books she'd loaded on the sd card and it GOT ME.

I like e-ink. It's much better on the eyes than normal screens.
Being a book addict I hesitated for ages before I bought a reader (second hand) and am very content with it. It's nice to be able to change the font size and read without glasses. An on a vacation you can bring a stack of books without being fined for your luggage being too heavy.
Now if only I would learn to suppress the ingrained habit to turn the pages... :D

It's actually my real phone, a droid, but my brother downloaded 8 billion books into it for me. It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of a real kindle, I just call it that because it is a kindle app. Meanwhile, for junk reading it's kinda handy, books I really don't need to keep or lug around etc. but I still like my reference library and one day I'll have a huge library all mine mwuhahahahaha.

Do you use Calibre to store all your ebooks? It's really a nice little free thingy, it will convert the books to whatever format you need (unless its got one of those nasty DRMs).

My sister bought this ereader second hand off of Craigslist. Then I think she put Android on it, or something. I still haven't got it all figured out yet. I tried plugging it into my computer but it says it needs a driver, and then it searches for the driver and can't find it :rwmad: I don't have wi-fi so if I ever want to get more books or use Calibre I need to figure that shit out.

I have a Kindle app on my Touchpad (yes, I'm one of the Firesale Few ;) ). I read a book or two on it, but it wasn't the same. In the beginning, I found my fingers automatically trying to physically turn the page. The swiping gesture left me empty.

Yes, I'm a throwback. The good thing is, with the rise of e-readers, actual used paperback prices have plummeted. Yay!

no mine is actual Kindle software, came bundled with the phone. I dunnow where all the free books came from, I find with my brother it's often better not to ask.

My sister got all these books from somewhere, lol. The Calibre program lets you store them on your computer, and then transfer them to your device in the proper format. It's cool because you can easily search through the books in several different ways. Also, if you've got a book but don't have the cover or a description then you can use the program to add the missing data. In the beginning I was more excited about Calibre than the ereader!
