The top stars in the sporting world will be honored Thursday in Los Angeles as part of the annual ESPY awards, presented by ESPN. The event awards the top performers in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and others while naming the best team of the year.

Dawn Staley, Prince Harry honored with awards at 2024 ESPYS​

Staley, coach of the national champion South Carolina women's basketball team, received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for both her support and fight for equality for women's sports and for her leadership in the fight against cancer. Her friend, Tennessee standout Nikki McCray-Penson, died of breast cancer and Staley's sister was diagnosed with leukemia. Staley was motivated by their battles to become an advocate for cancer research.

Prince Harry received the Pat Tillman Award for Service, and he mentioned the late Army Ranger's mother who had criticized ESPN for honoring the royal. With wife Meghan joining in a standing ovation, the Duke of Sussex accepted the trophy from three service veterans who were injured during their tours of duty. Harry served in the British military for 10 years, including two tours in Afghanistan as a helicopter pilot.

Highlights from the 2024 ESPY Awards After Serena Williams Hosts and Prince Harry Is Honored​

For one night only, athletes from across every sport will gathered to celebrate incredible feats and remarkable moments. The 2024 ESPY Awards were being held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 11, with host is Serena Williams leading the way. She was joined by celebs like Jennifer Gamer, Quinta Brunson, Lindsey Vonn, Drew Brees and her sister Venus Williams to both roast and honor the athletes of the year. WNBA rookie star Catlin Clark was the athlete with the most nominations going into the night, and took home the award for best women's athlete, college sports and best breakthrough athlete. Patrick Mahomes was also a big winner, earning the awards for best NFL player and best athlete, men's sports, as was A'ja Wilson, who won best WNBA player and best athlete, women's sports. The ESPYS also got the royal honor of having Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in attendance. Harry was honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service, for his impact on the veteran community through the Invictus Games.

Simone Biles' comeback tour continues with a win for best comeback athlete at the 2024 ESPY Awards. Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the gymnast, 27, nabbed the honor over the Cleveland Browns' Joe Flacco, UConn basketball's Paige Bueckers and the New Orleans Pelicans' Zion Williamson.

Serena Williams and Quinta Brunson likely won't be hanging out with Harrison Butker at any ESPYS afterparties. During a segment with Venus Williams at the 2024 ESPY Awards, the three women jokingly gave the crowd an introduction to women's sports and "tips on how to enjoy them," as leagues like the WNBA see record-breaking audiences. After Venus told viewers to “go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sport," Serena quickly interjected, “Except you, Harrison Butker, we don’t need you.” Then, Brunson deadpanned: “At all, like, ever.” The camera did not pan to Butker, who was in attendance and walked the red carpet but did not stop for the media before the ceremony.

Patrick Mahomes just went back-to-back — again! After winning his second Super Bowl championship in a row (and his third in five years), Mahomes, 28, went two in a row again at the 2024 ESPY Awards, where he earned the prize for best athelete, men's sports, a repeat of 2023. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who also won the ESPY Award for best NFL player, did not attend the annual awards show. His head coach, Andy Reid, accepted on his behalf. “Listen, I am honored to be here, to pick up this award for Patrick,” the coach, 66, began. “I’ve been around this kid for two years now, and to watch him grow as a football player, as a teammate, as a leader has been phenomenal.”
