File Recovery Utility:

Final Recovery 2.1

Extremely good and reliable file recovery software. I was able to recover deleted files from over a year ago.

Is it freeware?

Its free to use again and again but the free one will only do 5 file folders at a time. Its good if you keep many files in few folders.

Ah...ok. I have to recover a max of 10 folders. I'll go over it twice.

I'll give that one a try. Final Recovery is good and it lets me see the stuff I need to recover but I only have the demo version and so it's limited to recovering files that are under 64kb only.

Fascinating, and good thread. Tell me, was it the concern over our deleted files that made you forgetful of posting a link, or your head reeling from your MF spanking?

I thought it was recovering my files because it was churning along for 5 minutes. But it turns out that only files under 64kb were recovered. So I guess I spoke too soon.

Zar works really good and does not care about file size. I am willing to bet it will recover any and all files that have not been damaged or partially overwritten.

Yes, I tried it. It seems to take a long time to analyze the hdd sector by sector. I didn't let it finish as it would have taken about an hour to scan the drive. I'm trying a different software now.

...I recovered them but they were only fragments of the original files and as such they were unusable in the end. I spoke too soon as I mentioned.

Yep, they would be fragmented, as I thought. The only way they wouldn't be is if you had basically not moved or installed anything in a year. When you delete something it is not hard deleted the file name is just deleted and the space the file takes up is allocated for use by the computer.

Those recovery programs can be useful if something goes horribly wrong and you realise straight away but they're not very good on the long term.
