Flight Simulator X

Got my hands on the Deluxe edition yesterday and have been spending a lot of time getting the game to run at an acceptable frame rate. Now that I have though.. wow. I've been playing Flight Simulator since I was 12 years old and FSX is just insane. At the moment no home computer in the world can run this thing fully tricked out with an acceptable frame rate, it's that intensive. It's optimized for DX10 and Vista for a start. I am running it in the mid ranges and it still looks stunning. I have only played a very short while so far and I only took one screen shot but more will follow for those that are possibly interested in FS.

I took the DG-808S glider up for a spin and snapped this at 14,000 feet. The settings are not as high as I can push them and I am still tinkering to get even better looking shots while keeping a respectable 25-30 FPS.

Many more to come.

Oh, I'm fairly sure any high-end PC running Vista RC1 could punk it with all settings at max and a slick framerate -- but by "high-end" you're talking a minimum of 2Gb of RAM @ 667Mhz or better and at least a pair of 512Mb WDDM-compliant GPUs in an SLi setup.

Nope, it's not possible yet. Even that set-up will not yield constant acceptable playing conditions with all sliders to the right. There are people with insane systems struggling to get 30fps with autogen only half way. It's the same with every Flight Simulator, when they come out they just pwn the latest hardware completley. No matter what system you are running FSX will own your computer if you try and max it out and fly over the detailed cities.

That looks absolutely awesome. No doubt my ropey PC would struggle to run anything like that. It probably wouldn't run it at all.

Well, I guess I have to admit I can't be too confident, not having seen even a still shot with everything maxed. Still, a game that could outstrip a system packing a quad-core 2.93Ghz CPU, 4Gb of RAM at, say, 800Mhz and a Quad-SLi (2x1Gb GPUs) + PhysX chip (top-end specs I've seen)... that's the kind of game that shouldn't even be on shelves. Fuck banning games like Postal2, we need angry parents railing against games like FSX.

Now to touch on a subject you brought up, Menty -- the real test of FSX will be cities. How detailed will they be? Will lights be dynamic or just painted textures as in FS2004 and previous? If someone builds a (relatively functional) car as a downloadable, will I be able to drive down actual streets, or will I have to sort of navigate between the outrageously mis-scaled and hazy colors on a flat plane of land with building-textured boxes sticking up out of it at random locations? All remain to be answered. :)

By the time I get a fast enough computer to run FSX it will be an old game on the bargan shelf at Staples where I will get it for $14.99. :)

Got mine looking pretty purdy now. Here are a few on my most recent flight. A quick jaunt along the west coast of Italy from Rome to Naples flying an Airbus A321 in clear conditions with VOR navigation. FSX pwnz.
