Michigan Man, 93, Who Froze to Death Over $1G in Unpaid Bills Leaves $600G to Hospital

BAY CITY, Michigan — A 93-year-old Michigan man who froze to death after a power company restricted electricity to his home over roughly $1,000 in unpaid bills left an estimated $600,000 to a hospital, his attorney said.

Marvin Schur's attorney, Cathy Reder, told the Detroit Free Press the World War II veteran bequeathed his entire fortune to Bay Medical Center.

Schur's frozen body was found Jan. 17, four days after Bay City Electric Light & Power installed a device on his electric meter that cuts power after a predetermined level is reached.

State regulators on Wednesday issued emergency rules designed to protect more people against electricity or heat shutoffs in the winter....

Obviously lots of unanswered questions here:
-Was the guy senile and didn't realize how much money he had?
-Was there some sort of dispute over the bill and he was refusing to pay it out of stubbornness?
-Every place I've ever lived where it was possible to freeze to death in your house, the government has made it illegal for utilities to cut your heat during the wintertime. WTF is the deal with Michigan?
-Does this guy have any relatives to sue the Holy BeJeezus out of the utility company? Probably not, given that he left all his money to the hospital. But if he does...let's just say I own shares in a utility company, and if they were involved in this, I'd sell them off today. 40% undervalued is better than completely worthless.

Then again, we're talking about Michigan and I doubt there are any houses there worth six figures.

And, I'm surprised and I must say pleased with your compassion over this case, give how you have come across when dealing with the disadvantaged so far. I would think 'fuck em if they don't pay their bills' would be more in line with your professed stances.
