George Takei: overrated?

Why does George Takei get so much attention? He was probably the weakest character and actor in the original series cast (Janice Ran doesn't count). There were even people saying that an Excelsior tv series would be a good idea! Now he's all over the place again. AND FOR WHAT!? Because he's gay!? Because he has a distinctive voice? Because he looks kind of cool in a suit in Heroes? What does he have that Ethan Phillips doesn't!?

To be fair, the only people who said consistently that an excelsior series would be a good idea was Takie himself, and people he had paid.

That's like asking why The Hoff is such a "legend". Takei(or Captain Sulu as he prefers to be addressed) is an eccentric character, and that makes him a cult figure.

And Koenig was the worst actor.
