Way to uphold the policy of killing things because someone with thin skin might get trolled over an inane and humourous poll versus somebody actually being trolled by something malicious.

Especially when that benign poll is posted by a Lonafite?! My goodness, Bonz, the day Lonafites go over to troll Trek will be the day that Reverend Phelps welcomes gays with open arms (and I don't mean firearms). The atmosphere that your mods have don't encourage any real discussion or critique about the forum's subject, let alone any humourous polls about which might be better, lest someone get trolled. That's pretty pathetic. It seems to me that the mods have a thinner skin than some of the general membership there, because if they're going to close benign polls on whether the writing on Voyager or Josie and the Pussycats is better, I daresay they're getting trolled by someone who isn't setting out to troll at all.

My only regret over anything was that it happened to a LONAFite and one that I like and hate to see possibly upset over what happened.

But I know how things work on our board. And coming in with something like that is guaranteed to be problematic. I don't know if Yub knew that, probably not, but my mods (and myself) certainly did. I didn't tell the mods "do this", but I certainly understand why they did it and closing it was the smart move.

By the way (and yes, you may call me humorless now ;) ) it wasn't funny. It was lame and somewhat annoying. I've read lots of funny stuff online (including occasional trolls on TrekBBS) and this wasn't.

Now go on ahead and tell me what a humorless person I am, or that my board is too tight/joyless/whatever. Funny how people keep coming back to it. :P

I really am somewhat humorless at this point. Ten years online has jaded me. But I have lots of fond memories of the LONAFites, I lurk over there and remember when a shitload of us used to chat. The chat used to go so fast, I could barely keep up.

By the way, since she's probably reading this, "Hi" to MM. I've not been in chats much (that too has changed) and I've not said "hi" to anyone in seeming forever.

And if Biotech is reading this (possible, since he's a LONAFite), hope all is well with you and your family. One of the most heartening things I ever saw online was how you found someone who loved you and started a family. I remember the old days.

Just proves not all life is bad and that every now and then, good stuff happens.

Gotta go. I'm rambling. Besides, I have work to do before I can go and play genealogy and I want to play genealogy!

**waves at the trolls on the way out.**

Bonz, the humorless hag. (Yes, you may quote me.)

By the way, I just read over at LONAF that this was a deliberate attempt to make trouble/get a warning.

Sadly enough, because I knew Yub from the past, I would have overturned a warning, figuring he was just being his goof self.

The laugh's on me.

Oh well, has been what, a few weeks since a bunch of Keyboard Warriors have had at me. I guess I was overdue.

You all can kiss my ass. :P

:D :D :D

It's summer time, who has time to do anything?

This forum used to be full of TrekBBS bitching threads :D Either these people are slipping or it's just gotten boring. So when are you just gonna do away with MA? Honestly, it serves no purpose. I could go suggest it.

:D :D :D

No, it wasn't. You read an ironic bit of humor and saw it as a terrorist attack.

And you wonder why everyone (including yourself) observes you as humorless nowadays...

Who wonders? I know when it comes to jackassery like this, I'm humorless. I save my sense of humor for REAL humor, not juvenile stupidities.

Maybe it's just that as I near 50 (efuckinggads) that my tolerance for assholery, never strong, is less.

I'm not on as much as I used to be. I hate to waste my online time with stupidities.

And trolling (sorry TK) most times is unfunny and a nuisance. There again, my age is showing. I never got a kick out of being nasty to other people. I never even liked practical jokes, as I always felt that hurting or humiliating someone so that one or others may laugh, is not the mark of a civilized person.

Of course, as we all know, most people aren't civilized. Online really shows that. I can't tell you how many I've met IRL from online who are BIG AND BAD online, but are PUSSIES IRL. It makes me laugh. I won't name names (as I said, I'm not into humiliating people) but it has given me a lot of personal amusement to see that people can be keyboard warriors here, but have no guts to act the same way IRL.

Just shows you what people are really like, without constraints. I'll be honest, I find that rather scary.

At any rate, just another day online. No wonder so many people online whine about not being able to get laid. I wonder why?

We have a difference of opinion about the definition of trolling.

Sarcasm and irony are not trolling to me. They are tools for people with intellect to express themselves. Trolling is deliberately planning on being a disruptive force to the point of distraction, where all of the board's focus is redirected toward the troll.

Trek has a double standard. Oldtime members who are now found at certain boards are labelled as trolls no matter what they do or say, and newer members jump on the lynching bandwagon because they want to belong. It's amazing how members I've never heard of will come out of nowhere to delight in chastising someone for making a harmless joke. It's just a scary atmosphere. Not safer or more harmonious than the past, just more paranoid and oversensitive. Only instead of it coming from the top (Lisa/Christian), it now comes from the middle.

By sheer definition, for having a dissenting opinion on any matter, I'm a troll. Also, apparently I'm a racist for having made an ironic comment on Spike's programming schedule, I'm still trying to figure that one out.

If everyone there wants a huggy board where everyone has the same safe sense of humor, so be it. But it's still sad for some of us that knew a different time...

Come on, it's a well established fact that Voyager is shit. The description for the Voyager forum should read "it's a bit shit really."

Still, I got warned the other day for saying "fuck you" to someone, AND YOU DON'T SEE ME CRYING LIKE A LONAFITE. So maybe T'Bonz and LONAF both suck equally.

Saying 'fuck you', one would expect a warning. But not for being benignly witty.

And LoNAFites don't cry. We just go off our meds.

**laughs at Wacky's post**

Eggs Mayonnaise, I didn't find Yub's post to be witty (no offense, Yub. That isn't meant as a personal slap at you.) I just didn't.

I know some at my board have a problem with labeling. Heck, I vacillate myself between overly strict and overly lenient. Ask anyone.

As for sarcasm? I'm the queen of it. Being sarcastic does not preclude trolling. Being witty (if such is the case) is not a pass to troll. Well he SHOULD have been allowed to post what he did 'cause it's FUNNY.

1. It wasn't. Was lame.
2. Trolling be trolling. You might make me smile if you're clever enough (in short supply online, alas), but you'll still be nailed for trolling.

Calling something sarcasm, irony, satire or any such term does not mean that a post should get a pass. Trolling be trolling.

The poster openly admitted he posted, thinking to get a warning. Hello trolling. If there was any doubt, that rather settled it.

Anyone who knows TrekBBS knows that dropping a grenade like that into VOY forum will cause problems.

Of course, as I've said, I'm just not into trolling. I don't get the jollies out of getting a rise out of people that seem to make the day of some folks.

In spite of this, I don't see Yub as a troll. One trolling post does not a troll make.

And y'all know I don't give a shit about that stupid board loyalty stuff. Why you little minds have to cling to one and only one and decry all others is beyond me. They're internet posting boards, not an exclusive club. They all have politics, good posters, stupid posters, yadda yadda. It just boils down to whatever you get out of each place.

I've never understood why people cling to one place. Loyalty? For messageboards where people probably are not what they really are? Why on Earth would one be loyal to unknowns? It's like being loyal to the characters of a book.

I'm at peace with the fact that Trek isn't my scene anymore, and that I'm now reduced to a handful of posts per year. I just wish that you'd listen to yourself when you talk about board loyalty freaks. TrekBBS members (and especially the more paranoid mods) need that speech more than anyone here, or at LoNAF.

We didn't all become TK terrorists.

You know, we're all just volunteers. With 40 odd mods, one gets a whole spectrum of personalities running the gamut from tight to lenient. Usually I try to find the middle ground when it comes to running the place.

I don't mean that people are loyal to other boards in lieu of TrekBBS. To be honest, I don't care about that. I don't get the WHOLE thing. Why some think one board is the ONLY board and the rest are flawed. That goes for any poster (or mod) on any board who holds that attitude.

It's like they feel that they've joined an exclusive club and all others are "the enemy". I just find that so - limiting.

I do listen to what people say and do try to correct when things go wrong. I have people who aren't afraid over there to tell ME when I'm wrong (and sometimes I am.) I recognize some of the past problems and why things sometimes were handled badly (resulting in the creation of some of these boards.) I hope that any fuck-ups I do are *mine* and not that of my predecessors. In short, I hope to have profited from history.

I know TrekBBS isn't for everyone. I fully understand that. I have boards, even ones that you know here (but I won't go into specifics), that aren't really my cup of tea. I don't go over there and ask them to change, I either accept them as they are, or leave.

Then again, I'm not as much into the community thing. I mean, I like loads of people online, but to me, it's not really as much of a community. It's like glorified pen-pals. Sometimes some of the friendships have crossed over into real life, but the vast majority are just pleasant times on the screen, you know?

Here's the thing that bothers me:

Yub's poll wasn't meant to be funny or ironic, IMO. It was meant to get an idea of what people thought, and he also wanted that from the members of Trek, but he also recognized that the atmosphere there might get him a warning.

What happened in the thread at Lonaf beyond the first post were several of us being smartasses-- and then rolling our eyes at Od0_ital's clanging the Trek thread.

To me, that discourages any discussion or comparison between Trek and other, possibly similarly themed shows. It doesn't matter how well I could present the argument that another show had better writing compared to another show, because I'm suddenly treading on peoples' toes. It could be the most articulate discourse on the subject, worthy of a thesis, highlighting the strengths of Trek-- and it would still be called trolling at Trek.

I think, Bonz, that trying to see Yub's poll as an attempt at humour is missing Yub's point. He wanted a discussion and opinions on a benign matter, knowing that there might be a knee-jerk reaction, but I don't see it as an attempt at trolling.

This is why Wacky and I get along so well. He says all the things I want to but could never get away with. Too bad all of this is such a non-issue that it will have no bearing on whether I post on TrekBBS or LoNAF tomorrow or not. The thrill of this level of drama is gone, baby.

Hey if you offer to teach her to write and become published, she'll grant you immunity to virtually any board rule and contractual agreements.

See, there's this thing called Firefox. Haven't seen an ad on TBBS in the year since I installed it, it's really great! ;)
