Forever Empress E
It is hard for me to call her Mama Kitty because I'm her mother and that is not the name I have known her by since before she was born.
But, on this date 35 years ago I was sitting at home contemplating how much my life was going to change the next day. Kiddo was already a month late and was showing no signs of wanting to come out of there so my doctor decided to induce labor.
On May 6, 1975, I got to the hospital at noon. My doctor came in at 1 p.m. and broke my water. He said, "More than likely it will be tomorrow before you are ready to deliver." Then he left the room. Around 3 p.m. I started feeling antsy - like I had to go to the bathroom, but no pain, no cramping. Then, at 5 I had a labor pain. I swear to God, it felt like someone was trying to pull a full sized ship's anchor through my uterus. I buzzed for the nurse and when she popped her head into my room she said, "relax, this is just the first of many contractions." I thought, "I won't survive this." At 5:05 p.m., I had a second labor pain and buzzed the heck out of that buzzer. Nurse came into the room and seemed to be a bit irritated with me. She asked, "What's wrong?" I said, "I'm having this baby right now." She said, "this is your first baby. This is normal. You'll be in labor for hours. But, I'll check just to make you feel better." I swear, she grabbed hold of my leg and flung it across to the other side of the bed just before she checked to see how dialated I was. She got a little panicky then. She said, "Oh, you're crowning." I said, "Yah. I told you, I'm having this baby right now." She told someone to call for my doctor and she got clearance to give me some pain medication. My doctor just happened to still be at the hospital - baby delivering doctors are at the hospital lots - and he came in and did a saddle block on me. I was feeling no pain thereafter and Kiddo was born at 5:15 p.m.
I love her. She is one of the bravest, most courageous, funnest, craziest, and most loveable persons I know. The world is truly a nicer place because she is in it.
Happy Birthday Mama Kitty (you know who you are!)
