Harry Potter SUCKS! JKRowling is a HACK!

Okay, I don't really think Rowling is a hack, but she is most certainly NOT the bestest writer out there. Her work isn't put together that well no matter how much her sock - er, loyal fans say otherwise.

Yes, I am aware that Harry Potter is probably not a topic one ever considered for TK, but I got to tell you that if you spend any time at all dealing with the rabid fans you will feel like doing more than fondling your gun.

I have been to these places, I've posted legit crits of Harry Potter, and what do I get? The Rowling defense league telling me that "I'm too stupid to read," "Oh, you ship Harry/Hermione, don't you?"....

NO NO NO and FUCK NO! I do NOT SHIP fuckin' Harry & Hermione. Those stupid bastards first need to accept that Harry Potter is NOT the greatest thing ever written. Plus, they really really need to accept that BOOK SIX fuckin' sucks even by the low standards already set by Harry Potter. What I may or may not ship has nothing to do with Book Six (or HP as a whole) sucking!

I knew I never should have started reading those blasted novels. I blame the movies, actually. It is accepted knowledge that no matter how good a movie is the original novel is better. Rowling proves this to be complete bullshit, if you've watched the movies (at least the first two) then there is really no reason to read the books.

Obviously she's not the best writer out there.

Why did you read all the way to Book Six if you hate Harry Potter? I thought THBP was good except I hated the fact that the good guys never kill anyone when the bad guys are killing everyone in droves. Way to win a war. Oh, and Grawp fucking sucks. But all in all I like Harry Potter, they are good reads. Way ahead of the substandard writing prevalent in The DaVinci code, for instance. And far more creative.

if you've watched the movies (at least the first two)
The first two movies are shite. Three and four are waaay better.

I read a lot of stuff, and I do mean a lot of stuff. I decided to blitz through the Harry Potter novels last year, because reading Ancient Egyptian History of the Pharaohs was getting a little dry, despite it being quite, quite facinating. I wanted a fun light read and Harry Potter supplied that perfectly. They are kids books first and foremost, you know. Kids books that happen to be able to be enjoyed by adults. So don't judge them so harshly, because you're probably too jaded to accept some of the sillier elements. That said I was actually surprised at how dark the later novels got. I read all five novels (that were out at the time) in about two weeks. They're like crack. I'm not so into them that I would re-read them constantly like some nutters do and hang out on Potter forums discussing theories and the like, but they're decent books and if you didn't like them then maybe it has nothing to do with quality beyond your own personal views.

What differnece should it make if you did ship that way?

Oh, fucking Christ. With shippers, logic is lost to them, and I would know better than anyone here how that is true.

Suffice it to say I enjoy the HP series, particularly book five. And J.K. Rowling is proof that not all welfare queens will mooch off the system forever. ;)

Okay, basically this thread was started so I could let off steam at dealing with those people who think Rowling can write no wrong. I don't hate and loathe Harry Potter, but after dealing with certain types of fans I start wishing I'd never been drawn in.

So, while I don't love Harry Potter... To be honest I feel it is like the childrens version of "Lord of the Rings." That doesn't mean it sucks, just that I've seen better works, even better childrens works. However, I can almost understand why HP is so popular, because so many of the themes/issues are generic enough that many people can relate.

But I actually like(d) Harry Potter in the same way I liked "Married with Children," it was a bit of fluffy lite fun. That doesn't mean the early novels don't have their flaws, just that on the whole those flaws weren't such that they tainted my enjoyment. On the other hand, I admit to being something of a snob, because I simply expect more depth from novels than I do any movie/television show.

And that is (and probably always has been) my biggest problem with Harry Potter. It has no real depth, at all! I don't mind fun comical elements (or satire, which HP does skirt the edge of sometimes), but I hate one dimensonalism (hey, I like making up words), and too many of the plots/characters in HP are very much one-dimensional.

Why did you read all the way to Book Six if you hate Harry Potter?

Because (despite being somewhat simplistic) I actually enjoyed the first four HP novels. Even Book Five had some redeming elements, but overall I felt the characterization in Book Five was off, certainly not as off as it was in Book Six, but off. Actually, until the "IoD" (Interview of Doom) I thought the out of characterness was actually leading somewhere - turns out not so much. The impression I got from that interview was that Rowling doesn't seem to see that all the characters (to some extent) are behaving very out of character by Book Six. Seriously, there were times in Book Six that it was so noticable that I honestly believed it was on purpose. So, until that interview I was expecting some blinding plot twist in Book Seven that would truly dazzle.

As for the "The DaVinci Code," I've never read it, and I have no plans to watch the movie either. Not for any offended reasons like so many people, just the fact that I've seen/heard enough about it to know that I just ain't interested.

The first two movies are shite. Three and four are waaay better.

Ah, we must disagree. Well, not entirely. I love the look/feel of the third movie better than the first two. But I feel the third and fourth movie branch too far away from the novels. If someone is (for some reason) only watching the movies and not reading the novels... Well, if the movies do try and end things the way Rowling ends the novels, some movie viewers will end up bitching about how little sense certain things make.

What differnece should it make if you did ship that way?

Logically, I can understand why having a pairing sunk could color the way you feel about something. So, I can understand why certain shippers weren't going to like/enjoy Book Six. What I don't understand is why Harry Potter is so damn extreme when it comes to the shipping issues.

You see, I'm used to my pairings never happening in canon, so when the characters get with someone I'm content to turn to fanfic and ignore canon. *laugh* I doubt in her wildest dreams Rowling would have Harry pair up with my favorite choices (which are slash - i.e. male/male), so I've always accepted that I wouldn't be into whatever pairings she ended up going with. Although, I admit that I was kinda hoping for Harry/Luna and Viktor/Hermione pairings.

Anyhoo...

Go over to Mugglenets message board (sorry, but I can't find the url for the message board itself, or I'd give the direct link) and dare to say that you didn't like Book Six. You will automatically be written off as a Harry/Hermione shipper by the masses.

But worse than that I've been on sites almost completely unrelated to Harry Potter (Fandom_Wank and GodAwful) and when the subject comes up you will have at least two/three people (if not more) come in and tell you that if you don't like Book Six then you MUST be a disgruntled Harry/Hermione shipper.

You're just pissed because she rejected your idea for a character based on yourself.

Five points to Blindgroping. I haven't actually had that one thrown at me before.

But for her to reject an idea would mean that she would need to be presented with it in the first place. I can assure you that I have never made a request of JKR for anything.

PS - Mandi, may I have premission to borrow that image? I like it! Only thing that would make it better was if they all had vampire fangs.

Why yes, I am sick and twisted, thank you. ;)

JK Rowling was claiming benefits from the British Tax Payer while writing the first Harry Potter Book. Clearly this is criminal and should be sorted out.
