Daniel Radcliffe reveals secret battle with alcohol: 'I became so reliant on it to enjoy stuff'

Daniel Radcliffe admits he fell into a bad spell with alcohol during his youth.

In a new interview with GQ U.K., the "Harry Potter" star reveals he became dependent on booze during his days filming the high-grossing film franchise.

"I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff," Radcliffe tells the mag, according to the Daily Mail. "There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person's lifestyle that really isn't suited to me."

In fact, the 22-year-old actor, who appeared in the first "Potter" film when he was 11, says his drinking became a problem while on the set of 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." But luckily for him, photographers were never around to catch his boozy habit.

"I really got away with that because there were many instances when a paparazzi shot like that could have been taken," he says.

Radcliffe, who has been sober since last August, admits he would rather spend his nights reading at home or hanging out with his girlfriend than out partying.

"As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn't work for me. I do that very unsuccessfully," he tells GQ. "I'm actually enjoying the fact I can have a relationship with my girlfriend where I'm really pleasant and I'm not f--king up totally all the time.

"There's no shame in enjoying the quiet life. And that's been the realization of the past few years for me."

Radcliffe currently appears in Broadway's "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." His next film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II," will be released July 15.
