Has anyone ever gone Relic hunting?

missmanners

grrrrrrrr...
A family member has invited me to be part of a very small group going hunting for Civil War relics this weekend. I dont know if I'm going to be bored and should decline and no one has told me what I'm likely to find. It's too cold yet for snakes, so I should be safe.

;)

You'll get a buncha mini balls, but finding swords or buckles is a pretty thin prospect nowadays. The fields have been metal-detected over pretty good.

I bet it's a Red Baron.

The fact that you have first hand experience as a witness to the civil war should be of immense value as you look for your lost property. :bigass:

It's pretty fun if you bring a beverage of choice along (wine works, or liquor) and tell ghost stories until midnight. Drunken night-time relic hunting is much more fun than the sober kind.

I did some relic hunting out west a few years ago...

I go on a regular basis.

Do you have your own machine, or will you be loaned one?

er.... machine for what? I've never done this before, so I have no idea whats involved.

First thing's first... Cranky... it's "Minie ball," named after Claude Minie who invented the hollow structure.

Machine... meaning a metal detector. Here's the model I use...

http://www.garrett.com/hobby/products/masterhunterdata.htm

You turn it on and walk across the ground slowly waving it listening for a change in signal. When you hit something, you check your display, and the display will tell you the metallic composition of what you've found (hopefully). Then you dig it up. If you like what you've found, then you keep it. But always cover your hole back up.

You're friends will show you what to do, or you may wind up on shovel detail, but you'll have fun. It's great exercise too.

Your friends...uh... they do have permission to be hunting where they will be hunting, don't they?

OOOOOOOOoohhhhh a metal detector. Yeah, I have one of those (well the late mister had one,I've never used it) but it's in the garage and I'm too lazy to go see what it is.

I'm pretty sure they have permission since the family member lives next to where some alleged skirmish took place and people who live in that county wouldnt think twice about shooting trespassers.

Sheeeit. I know how to spell minie ball.

I MISspelled it due to wine and indifference.

I use that excuse a lot too.

Related Story:
Relic Hunting on Attu, in the Aleutians, WWII battlefield...but that place really WAS haunted (and I don't creep out easily). There are still dynamited entrances to bunkers and caves where the US forces blasted and left the Japanese to die inside. They are still reportedly there, and the guys at the old LORAN station (may not be there...this was 1988) had lots of stories.

We went, we found bullets, a lot of shreds of metal, and left it all there. Too many pissed off Ghosts.

I'm from England. You can't go traipsing across the countryside without potentially finding some Roman coin or pottery. The place is scattered with it. It's funny because if we find something 200 years old we're liable to throw it away for being "too modern."

The only "Relic Hunting" I've done is try to hit on some old chicks at bars. Cause sometimes you just need some old lady action...

I went relic hunting once, but you'd be surprised how angry people get when you spot a good relic, level your rifle and make a clean kill. Good eatin', though.
