Hasta La Vista

The Question

Eternal
Build 5437, to be exact.

Pretty nice so far, though it does seem a touch slower than XP -- then again, that could be because I haven't updated my nVidia drivers just yet. Will keep y'all posted.

Very sexy. Does appear to be prone to crashes, but I think that's as much to do with me not remembering to set programs for XP emulation as with native instability in this build.

Okay, have isolated the crashing issue (with Menty's help, sorta) to a conflict between Vista and the Creative driver for my Audigy 2 ZS. Got an updated driver from Creative that lets the new OS use the sound-card without crashes, but its support for 5.1 speaker configurations (which is what mine is) is negligible. I can select 5.1, but only the center, front left, front right and subwoofer produce sound -- rear left and rear right are absent.

But since I'm not even THINKING of trying any gaming via XP emulation, that's not a dealbreaker right now.

A couple other bugs -- my webcam isn't entirely supported. I can see video from someone else's cam in Live Messenger, and audio is perfect sending and receiving -- but my vid is scrambled.

One last one -- Vista-native IE 7 has a bug where if you go full-screen, the "Favorites" button stops working. The XP version of IE 7 does not have this problem.

So when do they expect to release the not-shit version?

Considering the first private beta was build 5112, I'd say they've come a long way already. But the RTM (Release To Manufacturing) candidates should start showing up this winter. Vista was considered feature-complete as of build 5308, so from here on in I would guess that it's pure bug-killing.

Finally started playing around with a few of the "extra nifty" features of Vista Ultimate (which is what B5342 represents), and found the spots where it really shines:

-Vista Media Center
Now I've never played with the Media Center Edition of XP, so I don't know how well Vista's version compares, but I'm likin' it. Full-on video from services like MSNBC (naturally) and Reuters is just goodness. Fully integrating it, though, is something Microsoft has yet to do before Vista is ready for RTM. At the moment, activating the Media Center forces one into the Vista Basic visual style (which I take to indicate that Media Center isn't fully compatible yet, as that's the message I got from the system when Azureus had that same effect.)

-Windows Sidebar. Operates basically just like the third-party XP app "Desktop Sidebar" but is actually smoother in form and function.

Haven't they tried to do that and fucked it up already?

I seem to remember one of the '90's having it.

^^If they did, I don't recall it. Of course, there are a couple of versions of Windows I haven't played with, so if it was in Windows Media Center, Windows ME or Windows NT, I could easily have missed it.

I can't wait to get a chance to play around on Vista, just to get used to it. The computers on campus probably won't end up with it for another few years or so, so I can't use working at the helpdesk as an excuse for learning it (I'll probably have graduated by the time Vista makes it onto campus), but when do I need an excuse to have fun with computer stuff?

^^Actually, the major thing to get used to is the similarity Vista has to Linux when it comes to the way users' files are organized, and when it comes to user permissions.

I seem to recall it being '98, now that I think about it.

But I can't check on it. I dumped '98 a while ago.

Like owner/group/world kinds of stuff?

Or something else?

I used 98 pretty heavily, but never even heard of a sidebar type feature for it. Would that have been vaporware, possibly included in the "96" or "97" betas?

More like "Computer/User" type things. But any change to system settings can be locked out from the Administrator level, including automated and manual changes, everything from program installations down to ActiveX-based browser add-ons, which (unless script kiddies start getting hardcore educations) promises to make the OS virtually bulletproof when it comes to malware, and that's aside from isolating the core system components (Windows folder and all contents, plus the registry) from the internet.

^^Yeah, basically, and it's a long-overdue catchup, IMO.

You know, it's been said that Microsoft basically just rip off everybody else's innovations...

I won't argue with that -- but I will point out that they at least have a knack for knowing what's worth stealing, and doing a good job of stealing it most of the time.
