The trick is to encode it in 320x240 resolution. If you save it in 640x480 for instance it seems to butcher the quality like nothing else.

Also, saving in Xvid, Divx or Wmv seems to be the preference. A video over five minutes long will take a hit to quality also but the main thing is to keep the window size at 320x240.

I usually have encoded Divx versions of my movies on the HDD if I'm going to be usuing them for editing. Sony Vegas (the editing solution I use) also has VOB and MPEG2 support so it's easy to use DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD and use the VOB's directly. Though I prefer to have Divx/Xvid rips of the movie/file for speed and performance reasons (Vegas can be slow dealing with VOB's)

As for Copyright issues... I lied in my application form to Youtube about that and that's why I got approved for Director status. With millions of members on Youtube and me honest-to-god not giving a flying rats-ass it's the furthest thing from my mind.

Youtube doesn't aggresivley enforce Copyrights. They usually only act if they've been contacted, it's porn, or it's from SNL or Lucasarts (new stuff not the OT... FOR SOME REASON?!)

Thanks for the tips

You wouldnt happen to have indiana jones and the last crusade on your hard drive would you?

I don't, no. You're closer to my Indiana DVD's than I am since I left them in England when I came out here.

Well I could have a go at trying it myself, I have the DVDs and some ripper software, if they do frown on Lucasarts stuff though it could be risky

I wouldn't worry about it. I remember one occasion when they pulled a Lucasarts game advert that was leaked... that's it. The WORST that could possibly happen would be your video was pulled down. You wouldn't even be contacted about it. I mean do a search for Indiana Jones on Youtube. There are probably a few hundred videos with footage from the movie.
