Help with Firewire!!

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
Ok, so the fucking guys at Circuit City strike again! I went in there this afternoon to get a USB cable for my Sony Handycam. I want to be able to use Nero to burn our home videos to DVD. Simple.

So the only USB adapter is open and missing pieces. The guy says, "Oh, no, you need a firewire. That's what works with Sony". I fucking explain to the guy that NOTHING on the front or back of my computer looks even remotely like it accepts 4-pin firewire cable. "Sir", Circuit City Boy explains, "All computers that are less than 7 years old support firewire." So I pay $24.99 and take the fucking thing home.

I just cut the fucking thing open, and I can't tell where the fuck I'm supposed to plug it into my computer! Oh, sure, it fits my Sony camcorder, but I only have USB ports! Where the hell do I plug it in? Am I the idiot here, or did StockBoy sell me the wrong fucking thing? HELP!!

Thanks in advance!!

Nevermind. I Googled "Dell Dimension 4700" +"firewire" and the first result said:
"The back has six USB ports BUT NO FIREWIRE PORT..."

I swear to God, I'm going back to the Circuit City tonight, and the following will happen:

ME: Hey, you, FatStockBoy. C'mere
FSB: ...Sir?
ME: Yeah, you know how you made me feel dumb? Because 'every computer less than 7 years old supports FireWire'? Come closer..
FSB: ...Sir?

*BDM begins whipping Circuit City Stockboy with useless FireWire cable!!*

ME: HAHAHAHAH! TAKE THAT YOU FUCKING FAT PIECE OF SHIT!! HAHAHA WORKS NOW, DON'T IT!!

I swear, you'll see me on the news and everything.

"All computers that are less than 7 years old support firewire."
Lying cunt.

You probably need to get a firewire card, if you don't have any ports.

I dunno about the price, but a halfway decent one should be relatively inexpensive.

^^I'm just gonna go to Circuit City, beat the guy senseless...and get store credit. Then I'll take my technologically-challenged ass to TEH BEST BUY, and get a simple USB cable. I KNOW my camcorder supports USB, because the fucking Sony website sells 'em.

^^UPDATE! Well, the girl behind the return counter looked like she could totally take me, so I pussied out and just returned the FireWire for a refund.

I then went to Best Buy and, you guessed it, BOUGHT THE WRONG FUCKING THING AGAIN. Only this time it was totally my fault. See, instead of the FUCKING 4-pin to USB, I bought a 4-pin to 6-pin wire. ARGH! So now, I have to try and return THAT tomorrow, and finally get the right thing. I leave for Japan on the 20th, and if I don't have our Hawai'i tapes burned to DVD, my wife will KILL ME. And I'm not joking.

D'oh!

BDM, are you sure the USB port on your Sony camera isn't just for stills? Usually you have to move digital video over the firewire bus, unless there's some new-fangled Sony camera with USB 2.0.

Check your documentation to see if you've got a USB 2.0 interface on that monkey.

^^Good question, and I will check it! I'm guessing installing a FireWire card is beyone my limited skills, eh? I'll check the Sony website again, but I thought for sure I saw a 4-pin to USB connection.

At this point, my only option (if I must use FireWire) is to go to a camera store and have them transfer the tapes to DVD for me. Crap.

You know what? I'm a bigger fucking idiot than I thought! Check out the Sony website Here
Here's a pic of the cable:

I think the damned thing came with my Handycam, inasmuch as the description says, "pick up a SPARE replacement USB cable" The goddamn site even clearly shows that it's compatible with my DCR-HC30 model.

D'oh! If you look closely at the pic, you can see it's clearly 4-pin to USB. BLOODY HELL! Now I have to go digging for the box!

Why do I do this to myself? I'm not a bad person, really.

Well, the USB that came with the camera doesn't work. Ishcabittle, I've sent you an email asking about FireWire. UGH! LOL

I feel for you BDM.

I've got ports on my new computer that I don't even know what they are for.
And my six year old Gateway POS doesn't have firewire. In fact, when I ordered it, i didn't want to pay an extra $500 for one of those newfangled DVD drives to be put in it, LOL.

You can go to someplace like CompUSA and pick up a standard firewire card for like $25 bucks. It's actually easier than you think to install, you open your case, take out the small dust cover, slap the card into the slot, close up the case, and boot up. Most cards will be recognized by XP right on the spot. Most. It is XP, after all.

The instructions are basically:

1. Take cover off computer
2. Remove port cover
3. Slap FireWire card into open PCI slot
4. Reboot computer, XP does the rest.

Even a hardware monkey like me can handle that!

This thread is so fucking funny that my stomach hurts from laughing.

You, Richard are a fucking feeb. All sony products are incompatible with everything. BUT NOOOOOO Mister Redneck Neocon Status Seeker has to buy a fucking SONY camcorder.

Serves you right, you smarmy isolationist.

Oh and all you need is the four sided plugin to USB that sony sells for 8.99

It fits the tiny plug coming out of the cam thats four sided, the top side shorter in horizontal width than the bottom, and then into your USB. Then it turns your cam into a mass storage device as far as your computer is concerned.
