Hey what about the Danish Giraffe?!?!?

Their first mistake was naming the giraffe. They should've known no good could come of that.

Kids have to learn what a dismembered giraffe looks like sooner or later.

They should learn what a dismembered human body looks like first... that science director at the zoo seems like a good candidate.

Why did they allow two closely related giraffes to breed and then decide after 18 months that the offspring needed to be put down? Assholes.

I think the problem was that since it was inbred (relatively speaking), any offspring it had would still be tainted by that to an extent. But as Filthy Whore says, I just don't understand why they let two closely related giraffes mate and carry a baby to term and name it and take adorable photos of its big pretty eyes if they were oh so concerned about preserving the gene pool.

I just read this on slate.com:

But the Danes also strongly believe that being a parent is an enriching experience for their animals. The problem is that while it solves one animal welfare problem—the well-being of the breeding adults—it creates a subsequent ethical issue, that of what to do with the “surplus offspring.”

So rather than keep the female enclosed during her rutting season or whathefuckever it's called, they want their animals to have frequent sex to enrich their lives... and fuck the results. Yeah, that sounds reasonable.

All the Scandinavians have a very fruity attitude to sex and death. This is a true smorgasbord of both.
