How Do Seeds Know?

I love you
For the gardeners, I am curiuos, how do seeds know when to grow? My friend had some seed balls and she said it was probably too late in the season to plant them or that they would not grow. How do seeds know? I don't get it.
 
Temperature thing maybe?

The more interesting thing to me is that no matter what way up you plant the seed, the plant will still grow the right way up.
 
There are a few mechanisms that will prevent seeds to grow. It is mainly dependent on what conditions the seedling will need to be able to survive and/or reproduce.
The most common mechanism is the distinction between those seeds that germinate in the dark, and those that need light. The seeds have photoreceptors that will notice when there's enough light, and they will initiate growth. That's why a lot of weed just love it when you prong the flower bed just once in a while: they get the light to germinate and will then get enough time to grow, bloom, and develop the next generation of seeds :D

A lot of plants need a defined amount of time to go from seedling to full, blooming (and, thus, reproducing) plant. If they germinate to late in the season, they will not have the time to do so before it freezes. Therefore, they have receptors that will 'tell them' when the temperature is high (or, in a few cases, low) enough for them to successfully grow. Those receptors are similar to those we have in order to judge if we the bathtub water is too hot or too cold to make bathing comfortable ;)

The mother plays subliminal messages to the seed in the womb. The message consists of a loop play back "grow in (insert month here) little one"

They can detect when the days start getting longer too. THE PLANTS ARE ALIVE AND WILL TAKE OVER THE PLANET SOMEDAY.
