I given this question some thought since I first encountered you. I've come to the conclusion that it's like the Samurai. You must first announce that you are, then you must live accordingly.

Any martial operator who assumes the position without the qualification would be struck down immediately without the accompanying skill set. Those who know themselves to be qualified assume the position.

Not that I'm assuming the position. I'm just hand turning the cogs slowly to get a feel for the mechanism.
 
How to be an MFer:

1. Post in the MF alot.
2. Don't be annoying
3. Be Loktar and sometimes ignore #2 and realize some MFers will still like you.
4. Be funny/witty at least some of the time.
5. Love of Sci-fi/Fantasy/Television shows/Videogames is helpful
 
So if you look at it like this is the culminated grand total type effort by mankind, you're going to be unimpressed. But, if you look at it like a bunch of monkeys managed to put it together, then it's pretty badass.
 
You can be anything in the MF that you would normally be anywhere else on TK -- except we don't troll each other here. Beyond that, our common interests evolve with each new person who posts.
