How we've lived vs. what we've left behind

All In With The Nuts
"Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe than time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important how we lived. After all, Number One, we're only mortal." - Captain Picard, Star Trek Generations

"This may be the last time we're all together. But no matter what the future holds, no matter how far we travel, a part of us - a very important part - will always remain here, on Deep Space Nine." - Captain Sisko, Deep Space Nine

The episode title could be a reference to a quote attributed to the ancient Greek statesmen Pericles, "What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others".

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion describes the source of the episode title as an obscure quote: "All that you take with you is what you leave behind". The quote referenced is likely, "All you take with you when you're gone, is what you leave behind," attributed to John Allston.

WELL, WHICH IS IT??? GORRAM TREK SENDING ME MIXED MESSAGES! Is it more important how we've lived, or is it what we leave behind?

I feel your pain, a clamp dropped onto the back of my hand yesterday while I was woodworking.

What we leave behind is how we lived. Live a life like my Dad and a whole town of people remember him teaching them about camping and shooting and all that Boy Scout stuff. Live a life like Hitler and...well, you know. I kind of worry that mine will be like "Volpone? Never heard of her." :/

But back on topic, I'm renovating a house and have 3 big oak doorway thresholds stacked in a corner. 2 days ago they somehow fell over and landed on my big toe while I was wearing flip-flops. It was that sweet spot of pain where you don't black out but you're in too much pain to swear and smash things.

"It's about the journey!" - Harry Kim
"But we're home." - Janeway
"Uhh, I mean, it's about getting home!" - Harry Kim.
