I got a message saying a file was missing or corrupt and windows couldn't start up...

So I reset and it started up normally. So maybe the message was LYING, but just in case I disappear from the internet forever YOU KNOW WHY NOW.

Sounds like a corrupted registry problem more than a system32 issue, specifically.


There is a way to repair the problem but it means a lot of copying and deleting of files under the command line. It's something that is a bit daunting for those with low tech skills so it's probably best you go into recovery console (boot from your XP CD) and repair your entire Windows installation.

This will replace the system files and any corruption will be overwritten. You won't lose any data either.

If you ignore the problem at this stage your computer will deteriorate though and probablty will stop booting. It doesn't throw up those screens unless something s badly wrong.

I've done that before actually (a while ago) and it worked fine so I'll do that...tomorrow.

Umm, I went into Recovery Console, couldn't find the command to repair the entire installation, so I just repaired the boot sector. CAN'T HURT, CAN IT?
