I want a new desktop computer

My old one died and I've been using the laptop for way too long. I use the thing for more than word processing, message boards, and email. I watch movies on it and play games too. Currently, I'm limited to little games and 2d UO because 3d lags a bitch. I need a graphics accelerator or some such thing. I'd just as soon get a better desktop with a 30" flat screen monitor. I see that HP has a unit that can be upgraded with a TV tuner and a PVR. I'd like that. However, I've already used up two HPs and not real anxious to spend that kind of money on a third HP.

Suggestions on what computer to look for are welcome.

Ooops.... this is in the wrong forum. If a moderator reads this, would you please move it to The Digital Abyss. Thanks.

I have had good luck with Compaq. Had it for 2 years now & it's never given me any problems. I'm not a computer wiz though. :)

UO? Cool. One of the game The Harlot and I are eyeballing for the 3d upgrade. Didn't know it was out yet.

HP is well-priced. I just ordered up a $7,000 system for her that I shopped down to $4800. That's twice as much as the "top end" HP systems, usually. HPs aren't really gaming rigs.

With Vista and DX10 coming out, plus the DX10-capable 8800, either wait for DX10 compatible components to drop in price (6 months) or pop the bill now.

With computers, if you wait 6 months, everything is cheaper but the "new stuff" is just being introduced. So you're always buying second-rate crap if you wait. However, in this case, waiting might be the best option. DX10 is about to make the big splash and only Nvidia's expensive 8800 can cope with it. You want to buy a system that can handle multiple cores and DX10. So waiting (in this case) makes sense if you are concerned about price.

Springing for a comp now and going cheap is a huge waste. It will be outdated and useless within months. DX10 and a card that can handle it will breeze through UO's 3D upgrade as if you were watching a movie. Don't jump the gun.
