Unluckiest Charm in the Box
I have never owned a motorbike before and have been looking at a few riding schools here in my area. I saw a bike in Pep Boys that's seemingly very cheap and is meant as a learner bike. Its a Phoenix 250cc motorcycle.




After doing a bit of research I come to find that its really a Chinese huanan FY250cc bike with a different name on it, but for a first time learner bike it doesnt seem to be too bad.

I've been asking around for advice from people that have owned bikes before and almost all of them are telling me to stay away from pep boys and that all Chinese bikes are junk.

I dunno......

When I was younger, everyone used to say the same things about the Japanese. Anything (and I mean ANYTHING) that came from Japan was automatically dismissed as worthless junk without even giving it a chance. If it was made in Japan, It was junk.

Now today, almost eveything we import comes from Japan and everyone that owns these things all seem to be very happy with them.

This will be my very first motorcycle. It's very slow (60-70 MPH tops) and was designed to be a road cruiser. I plan to buy it after the holidays.

our neighbour has a SWEET bike and we've all gone for rides but his wife has not - she just finds them terrifying. To give her props, she did try it once, but it didnt change her mind.
too bad.

btw, a 250 doesnt have much pep for on-road biking. I've ridden one of those purely as a dirt bike (off-road). You wont be able to take it on a highway, it'll be too dangerous.
 
Do NOT get anything under 450 CC's for a road bike, even as a "learner" bike. I don't know anything about "Phoenix" as a brand, there are so many other brands out there with a proven reputation, I wouldn't waste the money.

Buy a used bike for your first bike. You will be putting it down.

I'd recommend an old Honda Nighthawk (450, 700 or 750), they are pretty much maintenance-free, handle well, and are a good starter bike that you won't get tired with right away. If you want a cruiser, go for a Honda Shadow or a Yamaha Vulcan (one of the smaller one's). Cheep, and both are reliable.

The smaller early '90's Ninja's are also a good deal, very cheep. Just have a mechanic look it over first as a lot of these sportier bikes have abuse in their past.

You could buy her a helmet & then she will feel included when you tell her about the motorcycle. Tell her you bought it for her cause you want her to look cool riding on it with you. Or tell her it will make her look slimmer in the hips when she mounts it.
