Always keep in mind true meaning of Independence Day

Independence Day, better known to some people as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday that commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States on July 4, 1776. It’s historically significant because the Continental Congress declared the 13 American colonies no longer were subject to the British monarch. Let that sink in. In 1776, Britain was a global superpower, and to declare independence took a lot of spunk, to put it lightly. Of course, the United States had to win the lengthy American Revolutionary War, which it did.

However, a nation gaining independence from another nation is pretty big. The quest for freedom is noted on other national holidays, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Independence Day stands out more, though, because it’s more festive and less contemplative in nature. Again, we love a fireworks display and a July 4 parade, with its decorated floats, marching bands and U.S. flags. But people should remember all the sacrifices that went into the celebration, and those sacrifices, in some way or another, continue.

Independence Day (United States)

The first week of July is typically one of the busiest United States travel periods of the year, as many people use what is often a three-day holiday weekend for extended vacation trips.

Notable celebrations

Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourtn of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island, is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.. Since 1868, Steward, Nebreska, has held a celebration on the same town square. In 1979 Seward was designated "America's Official Fourth of July City-Small Town USA" by resolution of Congress. Seward has also been proclaimed "Nebraska's Official Fourth of July City" by Governor J. James Exon in proclamation. Seward is a town of 6,000 but swells to 40,000+ during the July 4 celebrations.Since 1912, the Rebild Society, a Danish-American friendship organization, has held a July 4 weekend festival that serves as a homecoming for Danish-Americans in the of Demark. Since 1959, the international Freedom Festival is jointly held in Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, during the last week of June each year as a mutual celebration of Independence Day and Canada Day (July 1). It culminates in a large fireworks display over the Detroit River. The famous Macy's fireworks display usually held over the East River in New York City has been televised nationwide on NBC, and locally on WNBC-TV since 1976. In 2009, the fireworks display was returned to the Hudson River for the first time since 2000 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of that river. On the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., A Capitol Fourth, a free concert broadcast live by PBS, NPR and the American Forces Network, precedes the fireworks and attracts over half a million people annually.

City of Wilmington’s 4th of July Celebration draws large crowd

In downtown Wilmington, people certainly got a lot of bang for their buck this 4th of July. Hundreds upon hundreds of people packed the Live Oak Bank Pavilion to celebrate Independence Day. Admission was free and it included music from Wilmington based acts, Loud Music Band and Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. It was something Wilmington local David Savage simply couldn’t pass up. Along with the live entertainment, there were plenty of food trucks and beverages for guests to try. There was also plenty to do for children, such as running through water to stay cool. And who says you have to be from America to enjoy the 4th of July, just ask this group of women from Germany. “Since the 4th of July is like a big day in America, in the United States and we don’t have it in Germany. We try to like make the best out of it and yeah, I think we’re doing a pretty good job right now,” said three from the group. But day then turned to night and of course it wouldn’t be complete without a firework celebration; as people lined up along the Riverwalk to watch them launch into the sky. Yet another 4th of July celebration was completed in downtown Wilmington.
