Iran digging mass graves

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's foreign minister said on Sunday he did not believe Israel was in a position to attack his country over its nuclear program, while an Iranian general announced plans to prepare 320,000 graves for enemy soldiers.

The comments were the latest in an escalating war of words between the arch-foes that have helped fuel speculation of a possible Israeli attack on Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil exporter, helping push oil prices to record highs.

Speculation has risen since a U.S. newspaper reported this month that Israel had practiced a strike against the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities, which the West suspects form part of a covert weapons program. Iran denies the charge.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Israel was still dealing with the consequences of its 2006 war with Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon and was also suffering a "crisis of deepening illegitimacy" in the Middle East region.

"That's why we do not see the Zionist regime in a situation in which they would want to engage in such adventurism," he said when asked about the possibility of an Israeli attack.

"They know full well what the consequences of such an act would be," Mottaki told reporters.

He was speaking a day after the head of the elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying Iran would impose controls on shipping in the Gulf oil route if Iran was attacked and warned regional states of reprisals if they took part.

Fear of an escalation in the standoff between the West and Iran is one factor pushing up oil prices. Crude hit a record level on international markets near $143 a barrel on Friday.

GRAVES

Iran says its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. Western nations and Israel fear Iran is seeking to build nuclear bombs. Israel is believed to be the only Middle Eastern state with nuclear arms.

Washington has said it wants diplomacy to end the nuclear row but has not ruled out military action should that fail.

Analysts say any U.S. or Israeli attack on Iran would be limited to air strikes, rather than a full-scale attack requiring U.S. ground forces, who are tied down in Iraq or Afghanistan.

They say Iran could use unconventional tactics, such as deploying small craft to attack ships, or using allies in the area to strike at U.S. or Israeli interests.

Iran's Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said reports of a possible strike were part of the "psychological warfare" waged by the West against Iran, aimed at diverting attention from "domestic failures" in the United States and Israel.

Mirfeysal Baqerzadeh, a Revolutionary Guards brigadier-general, said that in order to "respect the enemies' dead soldiers" there were plans for volunteers to dig 320,000 graves for them in border areas.

This would enable Iran to bury "all of them at the same time," Fars News Agency quoted him as saying. However, in an emergency situation, they would be buried in mass graves.

I think it's already a done deal. They either 'fess up, or get obliterated.

This will be a surgical strike though, with the full support of the "international" community. What Iran decides to do after that will dictate how much sand turns to glass.

They won't be blocking the Straights though, they have neither the strength or the ability.

My nickel says they'll back down. Otherwise the problem will solve itself.

Actually, I've been right all along.

Show's what you know, Mr. Know Nothing. You probably think the Israeli's are "illegally occupying" their spoils of war too :D Something like "Jerusalem really belongs to the "Palestinians".

Where is Palestine, by the way? I can't seem to find it on the map.

Anyway, That reactor will be gone soon, it's already been decided.

Just a matter of time.

Mmmkay; I was reading teh Israelis think teh Iranians have rox in their heads for taking such preperations, do u agree?

Maybe the Iranians were pretending it was WWII and they were the Germans or something?

Actually those "graves" are probably holes to store the used rods from their spent plutionium.

But if the Iranians think that suddenly all the arabs will unite to smite the oppressor, they're incorrect in that assumption.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department Tuesday criticized reported comments by a senior defense official who said there was an increasing likelihood Israel would attack Iran over its nuclear program.

The unidentified U.S. defense official told ABC News it was increasingly likely Israel would attack Iran, prompting retaliation against both Israel and the United States.

"I have no information that would substantiate that, and I think it's rather foolish of people who often have no clue what they're talking about to assert things and not even have the courtesy to do so on the basis of their name," State Department spokesman Tom Casey said.

The defense official told ABC News one red line that could trigger an Israeli offensive would be when Iran's nuclear facility had produced enough enriched uranium to create an atomic weapon. That could happen in 2009 or later this year, ABC News reported, citing U.S. and Israeli intelligence assessments.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said "I don't comment for Israel" when asked about the ABC News report.

"We are going to address the concerns that we have with Iran diplomatically and with international organizations that can bring some pressure to bear on this issue," he said. "That is the focus of the U.S. effort."

Asked if he had noticed increasing concern within the Pentagon in recent weeks about the possibility of an Israeli strike, Whitman told reporters: "You guys have all worked here long enough, you can find somebody with just about any opinion you want in this building."

In Tel Aviv, a Western diplomat said there was unlikely to be any Israeli or U.S. attack on Iran in the next six months "because the military option is the last thing that we need to do and it will not be used easily."

He also said he expected France, which took over the presidency of the European Union on Tuesday, to be tougher on Tehran because President Nicolas Sarkozy has a strong position against Iran.

The diplomat said there was no consensus in Israel in favor of an attack and that the United States was unlikely to take action because it estimated Iran's nuclear program would not reach a point of no return for about two years.

"I don't think there will be an attack in the next six months," the diplomat said.

Interesting read...I was talking with a vet from Iraq just last night who talked about covert ops in Iran, and how all the special forces are going over there instead of coming home.

Won't be long...

Not all vets have the right info. Plenty of them are just blowhards.

The joke will be on all the iranian sandniggers, when they're blown off the face of the desert.

One hell of a punch line, IMO.
