Nobody says "jif".
 
I don't think I've ever talked about my favorite image formats with anyone in real life, but that's how I imagine it sounds.
 
I talk to people about image formats most days and everyone but one says JIF! It just sounds nicer.

You would think the correct pronounciation would be with a hard G because GIF stands for Graphic Interchange Format. However, the correct pronounciation is Jiff, like the peanut butter. This is documented in two places. Trainer extraordinaire Lynda Weinman interviewed Gif Creator Steve Wilhite for one of her books. He said the correct pronounciation is JIFF. Wikipedia says the same thing:

According to the creator of the GIF format, Steve Wilhite, "GIF" is pronounced like the peanut butter brand, Jif, with a soft "g". To fellow employees of CompuServe he would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing commercials for the peanut butter. This pronunciation was also identified by CompuServe in their documentation of a graphics display program called CompuShow.[2] Despite this, many people pronounce the name with a hard "g" (as in "gift")

Ironic that the article says "pronounciation", but a good find. I didn't know jiff was the definitive way to say it, I just knew it was the way that I and everyone I know has always said it.
 
I've been saying JIF for 20 years. But I never knew I was correct in doing so. Q'PLAH!
