NEW AGE POSTING
Today, thousands of elderly Jews who miraculously escaped death during the Holocaust are living out their final years in poverty and isolation. Many Holocaust survivors are in need of support and live solely on meager pensions, having to make the impossible choice every day between buying food and other essentials like lifesaving medicines, shelter, and heat in the winter months.

‘God Has Kept Me Alive’
Katerina remembers when her small town in Ukraine had a thriving Jewish community. She remembers the synagogue. She remembers her parents when her parents were still alive. Katerina remembers those days.

But 96-year-old Katerina is the last Jew left in the town. Alone, frail, and in poor health, this precious Jewish widow has nothing left, except for painful memories.

Before World War II, Katerina’s mother got sick, and the 11-year-old girl had to take her place doing backbreaking work on a Soviet communal farm. The Nazis invaded a few years later, marching the town’s Jews across a bridge, shooting each one as they crossed. Katerina walked in terror, knowing what lay ahead – certain death. Just as she was about to cross, American soldiers bombed the bridge and the killing stopped. Americans rescued Katerina and her loved ones, defeating the Nazis on that bridge, just the first time Americans saved Katerina.

The situation is compounded in the Holy Land as Israel is forced to spend more to protect her borders, leaving less to help her most vulnerable citizens, including impoverished and elderly Jews. The result is that many are suffering from a lack of life’s basic provisions, and are turning to friends of Israel like you for assistance. The sacred call of Isaiah 58:7 to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, and not to divert our eyes from the suffering remains before us as we join hands to care for those in dire need.
