Fixing Windsor Border Crossing Part of Auto Strategy
WINDSOR – NDP Leader Jack Layton announced a commitment to a new, 10-year border infrastructure initiative to deal with problems such as the Windsor-Detroit border crossing.

Layton was in Windsor to expand on the NDP's auto strategy. The new infrastructure initiative will have an allocation of $250 million per year.

Layton pointed out that border slowdowns pose a threat to the viability of the Canadian auto industry, saying, "We cannot allow bottlenecks to create a situation where manufacturers are forced to locate production on the American side, just to ensure the availability of parts."

"The next crossing has to be built in a way that keeps trucks off Windsor streets," Layton said. "That is not local traffic. It should not be funnelled down Windsor streets, past schools, past churches, past homes and past local businesses."

Layton said that it's time to get on with the job of fixing the border crossing, noting, "The Liberals have had 12 years – and didn't get the job done."
