Let's get Ish started on some Red Hat

My old Dell and I were thinkin' after all of this "Mac sucks" talk and we're thinking we want to try out some Linux.

I'm guessing I'll need a hard drive to throw it on to, that's no prob.

Where do I head for a install image? What do y'all recommend as far as basic settings, construction, and the like?

The last thing I want to do is to argue about OSs and be uninformed, so help would be most appreciated.

Actually, looking around it seems that Umbuntu is going to be the way to go... the KDE interfaced version looks pretty sweet, and they'll mail you installer disks for free.

Sweet!

Unbuntu looks like a lot of fun - i'm downloading the Live CD for PowerPC right now... I'm going to see about installing on the PC box as well.

Speaking of making the transition to Linux -- I've decided on SuSE 10.0, downloading the free OpenSuSE distro now. It may mean sacrificing some hard drive performance, going from a 500Gb RAID 0 config to a partitioned dual-boot setup -- but I'm tired of not being as proficient with a second OS as I am with Windows, and I can't boot from my USB external, so that's how it is.

Actually, I'm not ENTIRELY sure that I can't. It does have an AutoRun thingie, and the BIOS does support USB 2.0 devices (keyboard and mouse, for example). Might be worth looking in my BIOS to see if it's supported as a bootable drive.

Okay, 2 updates:

1. Yes, I can in fact boot from my Maxtor USB HDD via the boot menu.

2. Running SuSE 10.0 from a LiveCD, I have no cursor. Everything else displays just fine (it even supports using my HDTV as a secondary monitor with no problems), and I know the mouse is working (mouse-over effects show up, and when I can manage to hit something, it operates fine) but there's just no cursor. Maybe the cursor libraries aren't there?

I'm going to try cloning everything from the LiveCD onto my Maxtor and booting from there, just to see if it works.

Well, problem solved. The cursor WAS showing up, but...

SuSE automatically decides which display is your primary display in a dual-display setup by going off which one is physically primary on your video card. So I had to unplug the VGA connector from my monitor, unplug the DVI connector from my TV and swap 'em.

Linux is fun! It's looks like the people from firefox made everything. Or really I guess I should say Ubuntu is fun, I should check out every available free distro that I can.

Tell me more about SuSe, if you care to... how do you like it?

Well, I like it, I must say. Of course, I got a LiveCD version, which created some frustration on account of it doesn't save your configuration settings. Real problem with that is that you have to reconfigure it to your liking every time you start it up.

I'm installing ubuntu as I type... after trying out the Live CD i snagged a POS HD and threw it on there... it's amazing how simple and easy (but powerful) the install engine is. I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy it a great deal.

After all that those couple Mac sucks threads, I'm really looking into reevaluating what I love about the Mac. It's true, they are powerful but pricey, stable but controlled, etc. on down the line. I work on people's macs everyday... and it's getting a little frustrating. Frustrating people that don't know what the hell a computer can do for them, so they chose a Mac 'cause they heard it was easy. It grates on you.

"Ma'am? Can you open a Finder window for me?"

"Find who? I'm looking for my Documents folder!"

"This is how we'll find it ma'am."

"Well we better find it soon, so let's find it. How do I do that?"

"Open up a Finder window by double clicking on your Macintosh HD icon."

"OOOHHHHH.... so that's called a Finder window? I always called that the desktop..."

No fucking lie. ^ An excerpt from today's shift.

Maybe I'll build a badass AMD64 box and ramp that shit up. Linux and all.

I hear Crow runs on Linux. I'm not sure what flavour, I'll send an e-mail to Linux Torvolds asking him one day.

Posting from Linux (ubuntu gnome)... it pretty fuckin' fly. Smooth and stable... I've got like twenty things open on 384MB RAM and it's doin' perfect.

Well well well. Learn something new everyday.

PCs are awesome. Macs fuckin' suck a donkey's ass.

No fucking way! So if you want VLC on your shit, you "Add Applications", pick it out of a line up and click install... it fetches it from the web and installs it for you. fuck yeah!

That's pretty handy. Here's hoping the full version of SuSE doesn't kick my box's performance down the stairs when it does the partition thing.

You're having it repartition your current HD? That always seemed a little scary to me... my partition tables tend to get effed up at the slightest provocation.

Do you remember that old ass app from around '93 called Partition Magic? You would reset your partitions and *poof!*, like magic, all of your data was gone. 'Course back then my "critical data" consisted of Command & Conquer saved games, so, whatever.

Well, I plan to migrate all the stuff I'd be really, really upset to lose to my external before I do it, just in case. And I've still got over 250Gb free, so hopefully the thing will be smart enough to use that instead of trying to grab real estate that's already occupied.

You know, after a week or so of tooling around in Ubuntu I've got to say it's a pretty cool little OS. I need to look around for some good software... I'm not finding a great deal of it on the normal sites. Is there any good torrent sites for Linux software? Is most of it free and you just have to look on the specific web sites?

Hmm... what should I look out for?
