Former president Donald Trump will hold an evening rally in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday, April 20, the same weekend he is set to appear at a Trump 47 fundraiser in Charlotte alongside Republican National Committee co-chairs Michael Whatley and Lara Trump. Saturday’s rally will mark the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s first major campaign event since the start of his hush-money that in Manhattan earlier this week. Also planning to make an appearance at Trump’s Wilmington rally this weekend is Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, North Carolina Republicans’ headline-grabbing 2024 gubernatorial nominee who is set to take on Democratic attorney general Josh Stein in November. Trump visit to N.C. on Saturday is first big campaign stop since start of New York trial

Former President Donald Trump will be in Wilmington, North Carolina, for a campaign rally Saturday. It will be his first big campaign event since the start of his criminal trial this week in New York City. North Carolina has emerged as a battleground state ahead of the presidential election this fall. The winner of the election will depend on the voters in a handful of swing states, and North Carolina looks to be in play for 2024. In the 2020 election, Trump won North Carolina by 1.3 percentage points. But the same year, Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, won reelection by 4.5 percentage points, cementing North Carolina's purple state status. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have started making regular trips to the Tar Heel State. They were in Raleigh together on March 26. Harris was back in the state April 4 for a speech in Charlotte. North Carolina has not voted for a Democrat for president since 2008. That year, Barack Obama won the state by about half a percentage point. But both campaigns are treating North Carolina like a swing state for 2024.

Due to financial issues, Mark Robinson family's nonprofit faces North Carolina DHHS probe​

While Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s wife told her nonprofit’s clients that she was fully down because of her husband’s campaign for North Carolina governor, she told a state agency a different story. For years, Yolanda Hill has led a nonprofit called Balanced Nutrition that helps childcare facilities apply for and receive federal funding for kids’ meals. Mark Robinson and the couple’s son and daughter have worked as employees of the Greensboro nonprofit. Emails and documents obtained by WUNC through a public records request show the abrupt closure relates to an ongoing investigation by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the childcare center nutrition program.

One issue highlighted in the DHHS records was that Balanced Nutrition at one point didn’t have a balanced budget. On a budget spreadsheet for the nonprofit dated 2023, an entry in the document noted that the group’s expenses were higher than its income. “NOT OK,” someone wrote alongside a frowning face emoji, directing the group to either increase its income or decrease its expenses. Another budget document noted that Balanced Nutrition wasn’t in compliance with a program requirement that administrative costs — such as staff salaries — can’t exceed 15% of overall funding. As another detailed DHHS review loomed in April, Hill questioned the agency’s motives in applying scrutiny to her organization.

It's happening on the Tarmac at the Aero Center at Wilmington Airport. Doors open at 3 p.m., but Trump is not expected to address the crowd until about 7 p.m. Trump's evening stop marks his first rally since his criminal hush money that began this week with jury selection in Manhattan. The occasion offers the former president a fresh chance to amplify claims that his multiple pending indictments are an establishment conspiracy to take him down - and, by extension, squelch the voters who first elected him eight years ago.

Trump cancels North Carolina rally due to severe weather​

Former President Donald Trump's return to the campaign trail following the start of his "hush money' trail in Manhattan was abruptly canceled Saturday evening after severe weather threatened Wilmington, North Carolina. Trump was en route from a fundraiser in Charlotte when he called into the rally — which was being held outdoors at the Wilmington airport — to tell supporters to seek shelter immediately.

Trump said the campaign would reschedule the rally quickly and promised it would be "bigger and better." The rally was slated to be his first major campaign event since Trump was ordered to be in a New York City courtroom for the duration of his trail. Jury selection was completed Friday, and opening arguments in the trial are set to begin Monday. Trump previously lamented that the trial has prevented him from appearing on the campaign trail during the week.
