Maxim Mod Clamps Down on Avatars

Gonad

DON'T FUCK WITH MY TITLE BITCH
No surprise here. T'Bonz decides that years of Kevin Thomas Riley's avatars must be stopped!

Of course this was just a matter of time in coming if one remembers way back when she was a mod and warned people for posting Maxim pictures of Jolene Blalock.

For those who can't get there, I will quote the more pertinant posts:

Mitty:I've noticed a few bikini avatars floating around the board. I'm just wondering what's the official position on this....Personally I have no problem with it... but let's just say I'm working on a male version for all the ladies and the gay men ...

T'Bonz:As long as nipples and bits are covered and things aren't too graphic, they are allowed. Bouncing ones, that depends. They are borderline and are decided case by case.

PoisenedPawn:Based on a thread a few weeks ago regarding a cartoon penis on a page that was linked to, anything is acceptable that:

1) Doesn't show genitalia or female nipples
or 2) Is not on the page that the link leads directly to....

SNIPPED LOTS OF SPAMMY POSTS

Kevin Thomas Riley: ^ That's great!

(And don't let my avatar disturb you!)

T'Bonz:Riley, that's a bit much. I don't want this place to look like the pages of Maxim. (Sorry guys )

Please change the avatar.

Neroon:If that is the case, then Mitty needs to change his as well.

Kevin Thomas Riley: Check your PM, please!

And I reitirate what Neroon and others have said. If I'm forced to take down a kind of avatar I've been wearing for a long time without complaint, then there are umpteenth posters that need to as well.

I have not violated stated board rules since no naughty bits are showing.

Neroon:That's not really what I am saying. I am simply pointing out that Mitty's is pretty much like yours in terms of the overall tone. Consequently, shutting one down seems to require the other should be as well. I did not mention anyone else, mostly because yours and his are featured in this thread.

Much commentary ensues. T'Bonz comes back with this:
It was over the line.

I know people like to drool over sexy males and females. I also know that people like to push that line and see just how far they can go with it.

The av tripped my radar because way too much boobage is showing (ditto for that one guy up further in this thread who posted his that was yanked.)

Mitty's is borderline. I don't personally like it, but it's right on that line. Ditto for the fellow who has the popular bouncing cleavage.

This is a TREK site. Avatars were meant as personal expression and unfortunately, sometimes they are used in a manner that is really not applicable for a Trek board.

I'm not going to sit and make precise rules (don't you guys have ENOUGH rules? You're always bitching about too many rules and yet you want a goddamned rule for everything!) about suggestive avatars. It's clear that you can't show genitalia and female nipples. I guess I should say that I don't want to see almost full boobage. KTR has been pushing the envelope for a while, this has been under discussion for a while before my action, and I finally decided a line had to be drawn again.

I know people will bitch and call me a prude (I'm not really, I rather enjoy seeing a handsome man) but this isn't the place to have avs that properly belong in some of the tamer men's magazines. This is a TREK BOARD. It's a place where young people come and others come to talk Trek, it's not a place to see just how suggestive an av you can have before I or someone else will complain.

By the way, I don't always notice the avs, it was brought to my attention. Others questioned its suitability.

I'm sorry if this will piss off people. Truly. But the only answer is to allow something which I believe is not suitable for our board. I have to draw the line somewhere and I'm drawing it.

You may recommence your annoyance at me. I will say in return this annoys me too. I'm sick and tired unto death of people who have to push the damn line. If I let you guys, next thing I WOULD see is full nudity.

And if I want to see that, there are 100,000,000 other places on the 'net. I'm here to talk Trek. Aren't you?

The comments continue, until T'Bonz comes in, posts the following, and locks the thread:
Since there is no option to turn off individual avatars, this is the way it has to be. I'm pretty liberal with what is put up there (I have no problem with Jolene's butt), but KTR's av went too far and I'm not real comfortable with Mitty's either, if truth be told.

Use some common sense. Avs don't have to be puritanical, but let's not go into Maxim territory.

And quit bitching about arbitrariness. If I wanted to be arbitrary, you all would have see it long, long ago. More often than not, I bend over backwards trying to be fair and reasonable. A little bit of faith in me would be nice.

Then again, I wanted a pony for Christmas when I was a kid, and didn't get it. Such is life.

Final word and then I'm closing this, because I'm only human and I'm afraid if this does continue, I will be very tempted to do the "all or nothing" bit and it would be "nothing". Most of you know what is really acceptable, you know it, I know it. I'm human guys. I've run this place for a year and a half now. I've barely been at the site the last few days because the whole thing in the scheme of my life is so petty and annoying, that I want to react emotionally, which I've tried not to do while running this place.

Please don't push the line and try to make things racier and racier. Like it or not, this is a Trek board and it's not really the place for some of those avs. Meet me halfway.

As for the UGO avs, you know and I know they are a necessary evil and I have zero control over them. I personally dislike them immensely, because I don't like the picture they present of women and what they "sell", but then again, that happens in real life too. Not a damn thing I can do about the UGO ads and it's unfortunate that it makes me/us look like hypocrites for censoring yours and not theirs, but this is life.

In a perfect online world, there would be 100% fairness, 100% justice, equality, freedom of speech. Of course, in a fair online world, everyone would be bending over backwards to be good to one another too, you know?

This isn't a perfect online world. It's run by an imperfect human, imperfect (if dedicated, and to whom I'm grateful for their help) mods and imperfect posters post here.

You'd make my life easier if you'd not get all up in the air over stuff, especially when you know you're pushing the line. I've given you what I can, I have more goodies coming (probably early this week after some real life things settle, I have a child with an 18th birthday upcoming so want to celebrate that ) and when I deny something, I have a very good reason, the reason in this case being that some avs are getting too graphic. I don't want to throw new rules in, I already feel that we have too many rules and hate to have to codify everything, just use some damned common sense and don't always push, push, push. Because one day you'll push once too often and I'll be gone and as much as a pain in the ass as I may be or imperfect as I am, I care about this place. And I can tell you, it'll be hard to find someone else who will put up with running this place.

Just meet me halfway, OK?

I'm not sure, but I think this is KTR's avatar:

How can she assume that everyone is psychic enough to know where her "line" is?

It's not that simple, 'Bonz. "Just don't do it" isn't a good enough answer unless you follow it up with "because I'm running things here and that's the way I feel right now, if you want clear rules read the inside of a Scrabble box."

Which is fine, you ARE running things and reserve that right. Just call it what it is, y'know? The place is probably wearing you down like crazy and I'm sure you don't have the patience for this kind of debate you once did. Just let peeple know to expect that. You'll probably get less whining in return once they know where you stand.

T'Bonz:As long as nipples and bits are covered and things aren't too graphic

Translation: Thanks to my little fine print comment, I'll be able to pick and choose which are too graphic.

She kinda has a point though. People who know they are going to get in trouble over their avatars, usually know it right when they set it as their avatar. Its no different than MX here knowing fully well how one of us is going to react when he posts certain things. Only difference is I'd recommend driving MX crazy by not playing along, and I'd NOT recommend doing it to Bonz. :D

They should set default avatars and only allow premium members to set their own.

Usually? How can you be sure?

Fuck her. She doesn't know who I am there, and your suggestion has yet to work.

See, that's exactly the attitude I refute. You can't assume people have that intent, that awareness, and the knowedlge of some unwritten line that's in an admin's head. You just can't, unless you enjoy debates about these issues going on 10 times longer than you want them to.

Hmm, sound familiar, Cait?

I'm ignoring your posts in this thread MX/Gagh. :D

Eggs: She defined it prety much as well as she could have without breaking into the rules and writing it down. Me and you of all people should understand the danger of making every single rule and every single code be written down on a constitution. To paraphrase AdmWill, some things MUST be left up to common sense, otherwise you are going to have to spell everything out to the letter, and whats the end result then? See CU's response above. :D

But that's CU, I mean c'mon! ;)

As I said above, it's not the approach I have a problem with, it's not kidding oneself that they use that approach, and being upfront about it. She didn't need 7 long paragraphs to go on about why she pulled it. She didn't like looking at it, and pulled it. Period. People would appreciate the honesty I think, it would have prevented a lot of past skirmished there under other administrations.

That oversimplifies things greatly. Let's take $M Gayboy Bruce Wayne's avatar. I'm sure he admires the male figure. Is he trying to cause controversy, BB? Is he?

Thats T'Bonz's style, Eggs. Like me and you, she feels guilt when she thinks people feel like they are being treated unfairly, or being punished with no explanation why. She's only human, and it really bothers me to see her every decision, and her every move blasted over here like she is the wife of Bush or something. Thats not directed at you, either. :D

More than I can say for some admins here.

If you were heterosexual, you might be shitcanned, and forcefully have your avatar removed. How would that make you feel?
