I've always loved His Dark Materials, but I'm also a fan of Garth Nix. The Abhorsen series (or whatever they're called) is really quite good. I used to always get Pullman and Nix confused, most likely because I read them all at around the same time.
At any rate, the first book in the series (Sabriel) is set in a world that's kind of like medieval times with spirits and monarchies and whatnot. It's kind of hard to explain, but there's a wall that separates that world from what can only be compared to this world. The main character of the first book is a necromancer (which isn't giving anything away, you find that out within the first few pages).
One of his other good books is Shade's Children. It's more of an adult book although it's marketed towards young adults. Really, really good, I used to have dreams about it. Sadly, I always would get it from my local library because the bookstores never seemed to have it in
