Motivational Speakers--Preachers of the Modern Age???

The other night I was out drinking with a friend and some more of his friends. One of the guys decided to have a little fun with another one, who I guess was a devotee of motivational/success counselors.

"You ever notice how not one of these people who write books and hold seminars on how to be successful were successful? Until they started telling other people how to maximize their potential, they were all failures." He got a pretty good rise out of the other guy.

Ironically, "You, Me, and Dupree" was on television the next night. In it [spoilers ahead] Owen Wilson plays a lovable failure who eventually finds his calling...as a success counselor!

Then I got to thinking about preachers and ministers. Here you've got a group of people who have no job--their job is to tell others how to be better people. Heck, the Catholic Church has avowed virgins give marriage and relationship advice.

And look at Jesus. Sure some of his followers were fishermen, but do you think they were successful fishermen? If they were, I suspect the conversation would've been something like this:

"YOU ARE FISHERMEN! IF YOU COME WITH ME I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN!"

"Heh. Who's that?"
"Joe Christ's boy."
"The carpenter!?"
"Yup."
"  Poor bastard. Help me with this net."

What's my point? I dunnos. I guess that in our era of atheism and such, motivational speakers, life coaches, and success counselors have moved in to fill a role previously played by the religious community.

Ur right, even preachers have become motivational speakers. wtf is with that anyway?
