The movie really is an achievement and I feel stupid for doubting it now. I watched it again at an outdoor cinema in Athens with my girlfriend and she loved it.
Now, she HATES technology, futuristic settings and Science Fiction in all its forms and had ZERO previous knowledge of Star Trek (other than knowing I was totally geeked out on it) and was less than enthusiastic in being dragged to watch it.
I explained quite a bit of back story to her before the movie started and reiterated/reinforced the importance of having Nimoy in the movie and who the Romulans were (something the movie doesn't do a great job of explaining for someone completley new to the franchise) and a few more things like that but ultimately she was impressed with the story having a very "human" edge to it despite all the action and "whizz-bangs" and she was very positive about it after the credits rolled.
I was surprised she took to it so well.
On second viewing some of the mistakes in the movie are more glaring but having the chance to enjoy the movie vicariously through someone totally new to the franchise more than made up for the rough edges and this time I'm going to be hyped for the sequel as soon as the first bits of information are released.
So yeah, this was my personal experience with someone totally new to Star Trek and not being a fan of the genre really enjoying it and that's impressive and I thought it was worth mentioning.
