Not the usual GFHH type rant - Website goes under

I journal on line.

Or I used to.

I PAID for features such as the ability to keep the journal private unless I authorized access, and the ability to post photos.

There were over 800 pages of text there. Stories, Erotica, lessons, general rants and raves. I did back it up every so often, but about 6 months of postings are gone.
I had a rather large "pool" of readers. The really important ones have my E-mail, I'll probably loose most of them, but the vital ones will remain.

Now the page says "Well, we had a disgruntled ex-worker who sabotaged the server...too bad, we are done, DB gone, no refunds".

I PAID them. No Refund?!?!?! Not to mention months of my thoughts, reminders, some good discussions, and if I may be vain, some pretty damn good writing. My wife's journal was also on the same site...it's gone too (although she wasn't as prolific as I was).

It's not worth my time to go sue 'em for 20 bucks. I am, however, going to miss those entries.

As old Ms. Barcode once said to me...
FUCKITY FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!

Ugh. I sort of feel your pain. That hasn't happened to me--yet. I did fuck up my hard drive once, but was able to recover it.

Of course I haven't learned a goddamned thing and started doing regular backups and I too have years of thoughts online.

Sorry to hear it. :(

Oh SB. My heart sank when I read this. I guess mine is gone too then if it is the same place? The few I had I kept copies of. But I will miss reading your blog. P.S. My heart sank for you, not for me. I enjoyed your blog. Thanks.

According to their home page, it's all gone.

(sigh)

Well, I backed it up last FEBRUARY.

And I did save this...

Beware the Mad Poets
posted Mon, 18 Feb 2008 09:26:46 -0800
Beware the Mad Poets, dear ladies
for while we blaze hot and dazzle
we also die out
A crying jag and the bottle clasped
and words mumbled.

We will beguile and test
making you wait and writhe
Waiting for our eyes to re-open
and the heart to follow

But we like our tragedies
We hold on to old loves and lovers
We are comfortable in regret
even as we hate ourselves for it

When we wallow, we are like pigs in the mud
rolling over, not caring about what we present to the world
waiting for the farmer's blade to bleed us out
and make us a quickly forgotten delicacy

But at times we can be Unicorn noble
running through places unknown to mortal man
and you feel special if we lay our heads on your lap
proclaiming you "pure"

It is for you to say if we are pig or myth
Bacon or tapestry's subject
the truly mad among us do not know
and the wise among us who do, only find that the knowledge
pains us even more deeply

Don't curse us, dear ladies
don't wait by clear pools waiting for the unicorn
The warning snort of the barnyard hog
will tell you far more than the muted tread of silvered hooves.

I lost all of my experimental sonnets, however.

Opinions sought:

Is it better to be a BIG fish in a small pond, or a big fish in a BIG pond?

I.e. I've got a few sites in mind, some large, some small. I'm leaning toward a smaller site...

Opinions?
(not that I'll necessarily follow them, but some people are more socially savvy than I am).

I think it would depend on what you're looking for.

Want people to jerk you off (make you feel good about your writings) go for the small pond.

Want solid criticism, not influenced by personal feelings, and access to larger pool of readers, go big pond.

Ah. I was thinking the fishpond was related to quality of service. If you're the #1 customer of a little ISP you can demand attention, but if you're the #5682090 customer of a huge site, they'll likely be more competent and be able to provide better service. Still, that brings you back to the big pond.

But taking Anc's read, I concur. It is better to play pool, chess, or box with people who are better than you because it makes you better. If you only pick easy "challenges" you lose your edge. (Granted, it sucks to lose most of the time.)

Validating your ego on-line is risky.

Your poetry isn't good enough to get what you probably are looking for.
