Obama's inauguration to be the most expensive ever

President Barack Obama's inauguration next week is set to be the most expensive ever, predicted to reach over $150m (£102m). This dwarfs the $42.3m spent on George Bush's inauguration in 2005 and the $33m spent on Bill Clinton's in 1993.

Part of the spending includes emergency funding announced by the White House on Tuesday to help with the soaring costs. Most of this new federal funding will be to deal with the huge influx of people, estimated 1.5 million to 2 million.

A White House statement said that President Bush "declared an emergency exists in the District of Columbia".

If there is snow, the costs will grow higher. The long-term forecast suggests there is a chance of snow on Sunday and again on the day of inauguration, on Tuesday.

Carole Florman, spokeswoman for the joint congressional committee on inaugural ceremonies, told the New York Daily News, which estimated the cost at $160m: "We're always very budget conscious. But we're sending a message to the entire world about our peaceful transition of power, and you don't want it to look like a schlock affair. It needs to be appropriate to the magnitude of events that it is."

Florman deals specifically with the inauguration ceremony at the Congress, which is relatively modest. The surge in spending is partly because of the Obama's decision to open the entire Mall to the public.

The federal government has budgeted $49m for the inauguration. But this does not take account of other demands, such as from Virginia and Maryland, the states surrounding the capital, that have also asked for emergency funding.

I guess all that "We can't spend so much money on an Inauguration with our boys fighting overseas!!!" stuff that the leftists were spouting four years ago was just nonsense.

Because waxing enthusiastic (monetarily or otherwise) for the second inauguration for George W. Bush was like stuffing twenties into the thong of Rosie O'Donnell as she gave you a lapdance.

How much was Bush's in 2001? Because the $33m in 1993 are actually $44.41m in 2005 dollars so I'm guessing they usually spend more on the first one...
Still, these figures all seem far too high if you ask me.

I just can't wait until all the Obama bashing/hype is over. He is president deal with it. So if Bush would have spent that much would you all be bitching about it or buying guns? Oh someone might take away our guns? WTF? Bush is much scarier to me, thank god he is out, assclown.

They're both scary in their own right. Bush is a fascist Nazi, and Obama's a fascist Commie.

Spectrum:

Communism Left o---|------------Centrism-----------|----o Nazism Right

I've always thought these things cost to much whom ever it is throwing it. But let's face it, under 8 years of Bush leadership, costs on everything have doubled and tripled so the cost is going to be higher no matter what they do. Not to mention the historic nature of this election so you can expect more people to be out for an event of this nature. George was just another White Millionaire given the keys to a political office. But the first black man elected to the most powerful position in the world is history in the making. And not the kind of negative history that Bush will be known for.

If you're so critical about shit like this, how come you guys aren't going apeshit about the $500,000 of the taxpayers money that Laura just spent on China for the White House?

I mean come on, less than a month left in office and George is signing checks for plates when 2/3's of the families in this country are just having a hard time putting food on the table.

It's just another example of the clueless nature of this administration and the hypocrisy that's become the hallmark of conservatives.

But then again you could say that if black jesus cared so much about the people losing their homes, he could just have a simple swearing in ceremony and use all the money spent on this "grand" event to help those poor folks out.

;)

There's a bit of a difference between spending 500k and 150m too. ;)
Both are of course hilariously pointless.

$500,000 would go a long way in an area food shelf and do wonders for George's reputation. ;)

I've already said these events are bullshit. If it was me, I'd have family, a few friends, order a few pizzas from Pizza Hut and a cake from Cub. (which I'd pay for) I'd let the media film it for the public, slip the judge a $50.00 for his efforts and call it a day.

Then I'd tell the public, you can't afford a party, this office can't afford a party. (I'd also have my sister clean up the paper plates. Payback for forgetting to call me on my birthday.)

Total cost, maybe $500.00.

Then I'd watch the Conservatives rake me over the coals for being a selfish bastard and not throwing a huge party and inviting all the rich and important members of their party in a show of consolidation.

Not really. If you were to add up all the bullshit expenditures over the last 8 years you'd come up with a 10 trillion dollar deficit.

Oh, wait......:(

I see simple arithmetic is yet another educational blunder for you.

 When you spend $150 million to throw a party you pump a lot of cash into the economy--overtime for cops, money for caterers, pay for roadies, stagehands, entertainers...money for restaurants, gas stations, and hotels (and not just in DC, everywhere between DC and where everyone came from).

And truth be told, I find it cool that Obama would use capitalism to stimulate the economy instead of writing a socialist gubmint check.

And all of those earnings are taxed. So, he's only really giving about 75% (at most) of that $150m to the economy. But, since he and his Dem cronies are talking about a trillion dollar (yeah, trillion with a T) budget, $112.5m doesn't sound like much, does it?
