Question is: How long would it take to recover? If the only things left alive were bacteria, would we have to wait several billion years for another Cambrian Explosion and start the evolutionary chain all over again? Given that the sun is about halfway through its life, would it be enough time?
The impact could leave conditions which are far more hostile towards the creation of life than in the primordial earth. It might be possible, but it might not be, or it might be better to say that it would be far less likely. But it would most heavily rely on how badly the atmosphere was affected by the event.

Or a totally new lifeform could evolve. Maybe silicon based, like a planet full of strippers.
