Oh, FUCK No....

Friday

Bazinga!
There is NO excuse, and I mean NO FUCKING EXCUSE for handcuffing a 5 year old child. NO 5 year old, even one with ADHD, is out of control enough that s/he couldn't be contained with an approved safety hold.

And, of course, the teacher's union (how much money to bet it's the NEA?) is backing this course of action.

The "safety" officer (safety officer?! the damn special ed teachers, who are supposed to be TRAINED to deal with severe behaviors, couldn't handle him?!) should be fired, and the principal, who condones this action, should be kicked out on his ass.

The kid's teachers should be forced thru hours of in-service training on safety holds to control such behavior.

Jesus....

Well, I can't watch the video.. but was the kid hurt? If not then it's not that big a deal to me.

The kid looks like a brat, but I can't imagine that the handcuffs were necessary.

"I'm saying this 5-year-old, not every 5-year-old, this 5-year-old could not be controlled," Floyd said

And this sort of totalitarian policing of schools is certainly a big deal to me. It's nothing but conditioning children in the idea of complete police authority over the populace.

We had cops at my highschool daily, and not to arrest anybody. They were just there for presence.

Assholes.

These days everyone gets sent to public schools (no matter what is wrong with them), so school staff are expected to be able to tend to all the kids' medical and psychological needs. I just don't jump to a harsh judgment when I read about these kinds of things anymore.

Except this kid obviously had special needs. Special education teachers are trained (or should be trained) on how to safely and effectively deal with severe behavioral issues.

I deal with severe behavioral issues on a daily basis. My kids pull hair, hit, spit, run around the classroom, and do lose complete control once in awhile.

I've been trained on how to *safely* restrain if necessary, until the kid calms down. Or we give the kid space to get him/herself together.

Believe it or not, I've also seen teachers with my own eyes deal with these kids out of anger, or turn a behavioral issue into one of control.

It's a fine line, and if you do not, or will not, walk it, find another job. One's power trips and control issues should be sorted out in a therapist's office, not in a classroom, and not with some innocent kid.

Good teachers are hard to come by.. plus not all teachers are capable (or want to) deal with special needs kids. I have no idea what the situation is at that particular school, but perhaps they are desperate for teachers. Was the kid in a regular (overcrowded) classroom? Or was he in special ed?

I just read the article again and noticed that his tantrums the week before were severe enough that they sent him to the hospital for a psych evaluation. While I sympathize with the kid and the troubles his mom must be having raising him, how can we expect the public school system to handle kids like this? The schools have a hard enough time hiring teachers who are capable of teaching the basics.. now we're expecting them to be so much more? Yeah.. the handcuffs were most likely overkill, but I doubt they'll have a lasting traumatic effect. So they tied his hands behind his back... I imagine the big stink over it will have more impact than the actual event.

What is the difference between the "approved safety hold" and handcuffing the out of control kid?

Really is there any reason retard children shouldn't be treated like animals? They certainly arn't capable of normal human behaviour.

I would definately handcuff a 5 year old child. Some of them are out of control F'in imps that could use a little restaint. here here

I dont see what the big fuss is about. When I was five, My teacher (Ms Manners) would beat the living hell out of us...

Bitch used everything from Billy Clubs to Brass Knuckes and nobody seemed to mind

Sorry for the delay in answering. I was wrestling with an abscessed wisdom tooth.

Anyhoo....

The difference is with an approved hold, the child is being held until he calms down, by someone who can gradually decrease the hold until the child has control of himself. It's "the child's choice" when the hold is released, and by how much. It's also more compassionate to hold someone, rather than depend on cold steel.

Being handcuffed can be extremely terrifying, and the child is less likely to calm down.

After Willowbrook, people are far more aware of the abuse that can go on behind the doors of the behaviorally and developmentally challenged. Nowadays you have to document *everything*. Even so, there is still abuse that goes on. Unfortunately, I witness it everyday. :(

Still carrying the scars of being placed in that "special" classroom?

Let it go. Move on. You'll be much happier.

Really you will.
