Ok then, let's have a serious conversation

What's up with the QOTW? The last 5 weeks of chosen quotes have been just atrocious at best, ridiculous at worst. Heck they have not been grammatically correct, they make no sense, and worst of all they are riddled with spelling errors. What kind of impression does TK want to make by putting assinine quotes at the head of their landing page?

I didn't have any myself, but there were more than a 1/2 dozen good qotw candidates which obviously were passed over for the one which now stinks up the masthead. Eggs and even Gagh had a couple of worthy ones. Not to mention Donovan.

So my question is: Just how does the QOTW get decided on? Perhaps opening up discussion on the candidate quotes may be a good idea. What do you guys think?

The problem with this is, if it is still like how it was, a relatively random individual is chosen by an admin to make a choice, if they don't make one themselves. Therefore, of course, personal choice comes down to it.

I prefer how we do it at LoNAF. They all get pooled together, and we vote on them. Shitty ones are eliminated by the admin starting the thread.

For here, all nominations should be posted in a stickied thread in QSF, then put to the vote.

^^ Excellent idea, Gagh. I would just like to add: The Admins choose the potential candidate quotes and make a poll so members can vote on QOTW. When the poll closes, the Admins should throw out the highest and lowest number of votes to adjust for dual inflation. Then the winner is chosen.

It's not so much as an idea, as what is utilized at a whole host of boards. I must admit, that I seldom pay any attention to the QOTW here any more, because I know it is chosen - totally at random.

Most of the QOTW's lately have been unwitty banter spewed by pets of the administration here.
Or the quote is a deliberate dig at someone not favored by the administration.

It's always either one of the two.

I say fuck off Grammour Boy if you don't get it.

Wacky's quote is better than most of late, though I say almost everything Wacky posts is QoTW-able.

ZOMBIE LIZA MANELLI TO EAT GRAMMOUR BOY'S BRAINS: MORE AT 6 ON CHANNEL 4.

I've brought up in sekret admin meetings the idea of using a 'member' nominated QoTW a number of times. There is a good hack out there for this already, that I could modify to our needs.

QuoteIt! version 2.1

QuoteIt! allows you to have a database of quotes integrated with your forum. Users submit quotes that can then be voted on by the other users, using your choice of two rating systems. The average installation will show a random quote on the forum home page, but you can include it on any vBulletin page.

If you'd like to see a demo, go to forums.monkeycrap.com. That's the vBulletin 3.0 version, but the only difference with this version is compatibility with vBulletin 3.5.

Features:

Random Quote
- a random quote can be shown on any vBulletin powered page
- the administrator can set a default rating threshold that quotes must meet before showing up as the random quote

Quote Database
- quotes can only be edited or deleted by an administrator
- quotes can be viewed individually or listed on several pages
- quotes can be sorted by total score, average score, author, submitter, or date added
- quotes have a "context" field that can be turned on or off to include more information about the quote
- each post and private message now has a "Submit to Quotes" link that allows users to quote things said on your forum more easily

Quote Ratings System
- quotes can be rated either plus/minus or on a scale from 1 to 5
- quotes below a certain total score or average score can be filtered out

Quote Management
- quotes can either be automatically approved or moderated
- the administrator can edit quotes
- the quote moderation que is like the que for posts, enabling the moderation of several quotes at once

If you'd like instructions for adding the random quote to vBadvanced, read this post.

The biggest objection to it seems to be that 'Wordforge has it'. We don't want to be too much like Wordforge.

That, and duals skewing the vote.

As much as I hate to admit agreeing with that numbskull but Grammour Boy had a good idea how to neutralize the dual factor. I quote him here:

Heh...wordforge also has a forum which uses a database. Heck wordforge members own computers. There that does it! I'm selling my PC.
