This is the thread about me.

I had a troll festival on the site and got to be both loved and hated. Ultimately, more hated than not, of course.

Anyway, it all started out when I discovered that the site was owned by a marketing firm run by a bunch of yuppies. The site spreads racism in that it tries to convince average people who post there to support running poor people out of town and whatnot. Anyone who's for black people or average people are banned. However, the site bills itself as a simple chat site about Philly.

Really though it's studded with shills who work for the guy that owns the site. They'll gang up on anyone who attempts to go against the party line. Anyway, the company has made over two million from promoting things through this site. So, the innocent poster is working, for free for this company and doesn't know it.

I tried to explain that with some success.

Anyway, if you'd like to help me troll the place, please contact me here. I can tell you it'll be fun because there's a very reactionary crowd there. If not drop by yourself.

The fight against covert marketing is a good one.

So, in the weirdest trolling twist of fate ever, in banning one of my alternate names on the site, the admins gave me full executive viewing privileges!

So, I was allowed to see everything they talked about behind the scenes. The amazing thing that I was right about everyone who is a secret shill on the site. Also, I found that they're selling ads in a promise to get posters talking about said ads.

This was a post made by a top admin, to his boss, in a secret section:

Malloy:

www.fark.com

Currently making 60k /month . It will be making 600k /month soon. This was published in business 2.0

While I don’t see pb pulling 600k /month, it can make some nice $$$. We need to tighten it up a LOT before trying to sell stuff…but there is potential there.

Jen:

My question to the group is this: Since we aren’t technically incorporated as a non-profit, my feeling is that it would be fine to go with this full throttle. I haven’t really addressed Kelly’s of several weeks ago, but since we haven’t heard anything at this point, I’m thinking we may have been rejected anyway.

I’m fine with moving this forward.

So, they're getting the innocent poster, who thinks the site is just for fun, to work for them for free in order to make them money.

Is this legal?

If you don't care, that's cool, but would anyone consider an attack of the place? Mine is well underway.

I can even provide topics which I KNOW, because I read it, that the admins hate, because they're afraid it will chase away advertisers.

It will be noble.

Could you refresh my memory about who DS is?

Anyway, I hope you guys find the story interesting.

If you click on the second link I provided, then you can see it's all still going on.

I always use an Avatar which looks like the silent film actor Conrad Veidt. He played The Man Who Laughs, which the Joker was patterned after.

Wait, they tried to ban you and in turn somehow gave you moderator powers ? Why doesn't something about that sound right.

Is there a site that DOESN'T do this ?

How are they making money? Ads ?

It's true and bizarre.

I have a screenshots of their executive admin section.

Here's what happened:

They have vBulletin just like this place. First, they took away my ability to use PMs, but I still had the ability to post. When I refreshed the page I saw in the "lounge" area three new sections that weren't there before. One was a Mod Hangout, the second was Reported Posts, and the third was the Executive Section where the top admins talked about their plans.

It seems that these people don't really know how to work vBulletin. There's been minor issues before and they didn't know how to fix them, so they're not IT savvy people. I assume that somehow taking away some privileges must have given me the others. Perhaps some admin here understands what I've explained. Personally, I have no experience with this program.

That's the story.

Isn't that the weirdest?

I said that they desire to censor discussion to fit the needs of advertisers. That's not free discussion.

Plus, this isn't having some ads to pay for the site, but and attempt to turn the thing into a covert marketing site. Would you guys enjoy a bunch of marketing shills signing up here to sell you stuff without telling you? The site has 12,000 members and they didn't sign up for that crap.

I like free speech and some honesty on website that present themselves as having no agenda.

Yes, I dread the day that some foreigner targets the american star trek industry in order to turn a profit. I fear one day such a person will come in, convince three large trek boards to merge, then fire off his partners one at a time. I fear said person will increase the amount of ads over time in order to buy a new car, xbox, and a dvd collection. I fear he will one day sell out everyone and completely merge his site into the UGO money making scheme. He might even change the entire appearance of the site simply because the people cutting him his checks told him to. I fear his greed will drive him into banning any post which threatens his cash cow. Any post that defames an actual trek cast member who might use the site must go, any post that threatens the large family market he tapped into must go, any post (like pointing to rapidshare links of where to download episodes for free) that would bring the paramount execs sniffing around his money must go. I free that his insane greed may even one day drive him to charging people for "premium" accounts.

Thank God it hasn't happened yet.

Yes, it's nice that you've found the one and only example of a host owner using the net to make cash.

Let's hope that the ENTIRE internet doesn't follow that example.
It would be a dark day indeed.

Thank Goodness TK never talked about selling its own line of T-Shirts and Mugs.

So, it's pretty clear that you hate the same thing that I do, so why are you trying to make light of it?

I've been on the net from before their was one, and have seen more and more of this stuff happen. Why should I accept it?

This is the city I live in and, although I love Star Trek, I think that trying to convince people to be racist and drive poor working class people out of town is a little more important to confront. If that doesn't annoy you, then fine, but it does me and I think it's pretty rational.

Anyway, I've heard what you've said and if you don't want to troll the place, then that's fine.

At least I've entertained you for a bit.

DS is DarthSickle, he's originally from the Philly area...Plus he's black.

Ah, it would be wonderful to get his reaction.

I work in West Philly with school kids. So many black people in town are worried about real estate companies, or the local universities, buying up all the homes, and then building new ones which charge rent they could never afford. In North Philly this has driven many black and Hispanic people right out of town.

These companies will find old ladies and buy their homes for like 18k when in fact the place is worth, based on property value, about ten times more. Some uneducated 85 year old has no idea about that. I personally know a lady who sold her double block for 1300 dollars. My mouth dropped.

Anyway, some of the mod sock puppets on the site get on there and start saying racist things and talking about the need to buy guns, then another with move into the need to change these areas, so the innocent poster gets sucked in. When they don't they're shot down by the fake posters.

In the 50s and 60s there were these real estate people called "block busters" and they'd come door to door reporting that a black family had moved into the area. Then, they'd offer you some crappy price for your house which most would take, thinking property values would go down. That's how many slums were formed. Phillyblog is just like that, only more nefarious because the real estate person is disguised as your internet buddy.

Beyond that it seems that they've tried to influence voting, restaurant choices, and lately where to buy grits, of all things.

If you want to sell grits, just post an ad, don't start a fake conversation about it.
