Is Peyton Manning retiring? Rob Lowe sets the sports world buzzing.

On Parks and Recreation, Rob Lowe plays a character who initially came to Pawnee from the state government in Indianapolis. So maybe Lowe’s Chris Traeger used his capital connections when he announced online that star Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was/is going to retire. A devoted Colts partisan, Lowe tweeted yesterday, “Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to NFL. Wow.”

The Colts went 2-14 this year without Manning, who underwent three neck surgeries, and they recently fired their head coach and general manager. So Colts fans must have, lit-chruly, had a heart attack when they saw Lowe’s scoop. Thus far, Manning and the Colts have remained silent on his future, a pair of “No comments” that had to send a shiver down the spine of any despairing Colts fan. Only Manning’s father, Archie, soothed their nerves, telling ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that “Noooo… he ain’t retiring. I think he would’ve told me.”

Lowe is reportedly pals with Colts owner Jim Irsay, so when the actor says, “My people are saying Manning will retire today,” you have to worry that could be some truth to what Lowe tweeted. I mean, even though he added that he hopes he’s wrong, I’m sure he didn’t set out to spread false news. Sam Seaborn’s credibility is on the line here! Irsay, himself, responded online, tweeting, “My sources tell me Rob will star in an epic remake of Deep Throat with aging porn stars and 4 finger circus clowns!”

I’m pretty sure he’s kidding, but note that wasn’t a straight-up denial.

Should Indy fans be concerned, PopWatchers? I mean, if it was Judd Nelson or Andrew McCarthy making the call, I’d pay less attention. But Lowe… he knows things.
