Proposal: 30th Amendment

Well, at $50-$60 for an eighth of an ounce it's markup is already off the scale. An eighth can be produced for next to nothing. If you're growing hydroponically, you'd need to spend at least $200 for a growing system and another $50 for nutrients and supplies. So, one plant, which can grow up to three pounds of marijuana costs $250 the first time you grow it and $50 for each subsequent plant. By that logic, your first plant costs you 65¢ per 1/8th oz and 13¢ for each subsequent plant. Assuming we're all buying from non-startup growers, and we're paying a minimum of $50 per 1/8th, that means it's being sold at a 385% markup. If growers were allowed to produce as much weed as they liked, it would probably cost less to the consumer with a 200% tax; because that means it would only be $26 per 1/8th. AND THAT'S JUST ON THE PRODUCTION PRICE. Imagine the revenue....

Now, at an average all US states have a $1 tax on cigarettes. It can be higher or lower, depending on where you are. The highest is Rhode Island with a $3.46 tax and the lowest is South Carolina with a 3¢ tax. Assuming it costs about $2 to produce a package of cigarettes, it has a national average of 50% taxation. The government is into chump change with tobacco. They need to legalize marijuana and eliminate the national deficit within a matter of years.
