There was never any need to kill off Data. Brent Spinner just didn't want to play him again... well nobody could force him to do it, NOT LIKE HE WAS UNDER ANY CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION to play Data again!

Now thanks to good old Brent & Co, nobody can use him in future books.
