I read something recently where they are saying that Rosie is a hot property right now because they credit her with raising The View's ratings some 20 percentage points during her tenure. They went on to opine that she will be back with another show of her own because of her popularity. That's the media for you. They are so out of touch with the people who really do watch t.v. drivel. Sure the public watched The View waiting to watch Rosie have another meltdown on camera, to say something totally off the wall, i.e., fire cannot melt steel, or Bush bombed the World Trade Center, or our military are terroists. But popular? I don't agree. I think that what we have seen of her behavior on The View is a woman out of control and in desparate need of a long rest and pschiatric care because her meds are no longer working.
Rosie was tolerable in the 80s on Star Search, but remember, she only had to introduce the acts. Her own routines were never that funny. She just had a tough girl mouth on her and that was unusual in the 80s.
Ellen DeGeneres has always been a funny woman, clever, good timing and up-to-date with her humor. I loved her show, and I've always found her a very likable person. But I truly disliked the fact that she traded in a funny show to make her sexuality the central theme. However, to be fair, her show was showing signs of age prior to her announcement and probably would have been canceled in a year or so. Who knows, perhaps the suits decided that being controversial by announcing that she is gay on her show was meant to raise the ratings and salvage the show for another season or two.
Because I work during the day, I only saw Rosie in the evening because she said something outrageous that made the news. Otherwise, I wouldn't watch her trying to escape a burning building -- which is pretty much what her life is right now.
I've never liked Rosie. She's abrasive, vulgar, and has a huge chip on her shoulder. She's gunning for someone, anyone, to pick a fight with and if she's backed into anything resembling a corner, will play the gay card. She wants to be loved like Oprah, so she buys her popularity with money. She had that public love during the time she had her own talk show, and then promptly blew it all when her hidden nasty side was allowed to come out play. Now it seems she is unable to keep her nasty side under control as she once did. Besides, it is never amusing to watch someone self-destruct. But I get the feeling that this is exactly what the suits want because they think the public wants this too. And maybe we do. Maybe we all love to watch someone losing their mind on national t.v. Sort of reminds one of bread and circus doesn't it?
