Saw II

Hmm... Just finished watching it.

I've heard a lot of people say that the sequel is better or at least on par with the original.

No fucking way.

The original movie is one of my favorite movies of recent memory. Saw II pales in comparison in every conceivable way except it gives Jigsaw way more screen time which is an obvious plus-side. Other than that it's nowhere near the excellence of the first movie. The acting was pretty lame on all fronts except from Tobin Bell (Jigsaw) who just generally kicks-ass and is a great actor, but I just found the movie as a whole lacking really.

It's not an awful movie, way better than 90% of the crap out there in the horror genre but Saw I is next to impossible to follow so it was never going to reach the pinnacle set forth by the first.

That said there were some cool parts in it, especially the callback to the first movie. The "twist" this time around clearly tried to outdo the original but it didn't get close. It was ok but nothing that made me want to rewind the revelation scene four times like I did with Saw I.

What else? I'm a hard ass when it comes to horror flicks. I don't get scared by them ever and they don't creep me out unless they are fucking wicked. Add to this that I watch movies in the middle of the night, on my own and in the dark just because it's my preferred method to watch cinema and you can understand that I don't give a shit. Saw II has multiple scenes of gratuitous gore and scare moments but I was under whelmed by all of them. Nothing made me even flinch the entire movie. I also felt that the gore was overdone and unnecessary. Saw I had some gory bits but it was never gratuitous. It relied on some genuinely creepy moments to get the point across and it was strikingly effective even with my usually emotionless response to fearful suggestion and horror.

The first movie blew me away, I loved it too much. The final scene was just shot and cut so perfectly and I actually CARED about those two guys chained up. I've heard people say the acting is better in Saw II... ha! Fuck off. The acting had some cheese moments in the first movie but all in all every single actor made a stand-out performance. Danny Glover ruled, the guy who played Zep ruled, Dr Gordon and Adam both ruled and Jigsaw is the coolest serial killer going. It was just awesomeness.

The psychological aspect of the first movie was great as well. The creep out factor was through the roof. I wouldn't even call Saw I a horror movie. It's a psychological thriller where as Saw II is definitely a horror movie. This is disappointing because Saw was such an original movie and the sequel decided to try and make some hybrid flick between the original and all these teen horror movies. Pah.. Not impressed.

**SPOLIERS FOR SAW II**

Ok, am I the only one who thinks Amanda fucking sucks? She's not scary and it's not the direction that I wanted the movies to go in. Jigsaw is the shit. Amanda the new Jigsaw? LOLOL.. No. Fucking crap. They dropped the ball on this. The end twist wasn't satisfying at all. Jigsaw is a fascinating character and at least that isn't changed in this movie and his scenes are the highlight of the whole movie but he's quite possibly dead of his terminal cancer in the last scene leaving Amanda to take his place.. Uhh.. Amanda isn't scary. And did anyone actually care about the victims in this film? I know I didn't. In Saw I those guys were the main drive of the movie, you were fucking worried for them. In this it's like: 'meh, everyones dying like it's Final Destination and I don't give a fuck.' I don't see how anyone can like this movie more than Saw I. The first is the undisputed reinvention of the horror/psychological thriller movie. Saw II has elements of it (all of Jigsaws scenes are pretty damn good) but it's mired with the main story in the house being very teen horror-esque. I just didn't enjoy it that much.

Got to say though, it was VERY cool how the basement was the bathroom from Saw I but it wasn't enough to save the movie.

As I said.. Its passable. Not a bad movie but just not in the same league as the original. Shame but not unexpected
